With a fearless look at a highly charged subject, Straightlaced
unearths how popular pressures around gender and sexuality are confining
American teens. From girls confronting media messages about body image
to boys who are sexually active just to prove they aren't gay, this
fascinating array of students opens up with brave and intimate honesty
about the toll that deeply held stereotypes and rigid gender policing
have on all of our lives. Produced by Academy Award-winning Director
Debra Chasnoff and Groundspark Media.

Youth Photo Contest - The Way I See It: A Youth Perspective of Public
Health
How do you see public health in the world around you? Health takes many
forms, and public health serves many functions. The environment in which
you live, work, and play affects your health. Public health is the
practice of preventing disease and promoting good health within groups
of people, from small communities to entire countries. With this photo
contest, we are interested in different ways to show public health and
healthy (or unhealthy) communities. Awards will be presented on Tuesday,
4/6. Cash awards go to the top 3 winners of the photo contest. The event
will take place at the Hollywood Theater in NE Portland. Winners will be
announced at around 6:30, followed by a screening of the film
"Straightlaced: How gender's got us all tied up." For more information
about these events, or to see a complete schedule for the week, please

APHA Health Care Reform Update
...after months of hard work by you and other APHA members and
advocates, the House of Representatives passed the Senate health reform
bill. President Obama is expected to sign the bill in the coming days.

Because of our efforts, the passage of the bill is a huge victory for
pubic health! Not only will the bill extend health insurance coverage to
an additional 32 million uninsured Americans, provide subsidies to help
individuals purchase health insurance, prevent insurance companies from
discriminating against individuals with pre-existing conditions and
strengthen the Medicare program, it will also provide billions of
dollars of funding for public health and prevention when it is fully
implemented. In fact, the new Prevention and Public Health Fund created
in the bill will provide $500 million for prevention, wellness and
public health activities beginning in 2010.

The House also passed a reconciliation bill which contains a number or
improvements to the Senate bill. That measure now moves to the Senate
for action - we'll be in touch with you about urging your Senators to
support that measure in the coming days.

Thank you again for you role in making this historic vote a reality!
