*About the Department*
The Legacy Project works to build trust and collaboration between
historically underrepresented communities most impacted by the domestic HIV
epidemic, researchers and research institutions; enhance cultural
competence; and initiate scientific investigation to increase clinical
research participation. The Legacy Project is committed to partnership and
relationship development; thus building bridges of trust, increasing
engagement and collaborative efforts between the populations most impacted,
and researchers and their institutions. The Legacy Project’s commitment
extends to addressing the historic inequities by working with constituents
to overcome the demographics and socio-economic disparities that threaten
all NIAID -funded research and ultimately the communities and populations
they serve.
*Responsibilities*
The responsibilities of the CEO include but are not limited to:
1.Engages American Indian/Alaska Native constituents in dialogue to learn
about community needs and concerns and to build community trust and support.
Provides input on community engagement strategies to protocol teams and
network leadership as needed.
2. Participates in the design of and implementation of a community
engagement strategy with urban American Indian and Alaska Native communities
in Seattle, WA and Denver, CO.
3. Collaborates on communication and engagement plans for individuals,
community members, research sites, and other interested NIAID parties and
projects.
4. Builds and maintains relationships with organizations, community members,
and leaders by phone, e-mail, and in-person meetings to build support
community-based education and further the domestic HIV clinical research
agenda.
5. Supports educational efforts and improvement strategies for increased
community literacy regarding HIV, prevention and treatment knowledge and
research through presentations, meetings, and other means at local meetings
and national conferences.
6. Identifies community constituents who may be gatekeepers or advocates for
HIV clinical research studies and engages with these constituents throughout
the study to resolve conflicts and encourage advocacy.
7. Serves as a liaison for information sharing and bridge building between
Native community members, leaders, and research sites.
8. Designs a training curriculum that would increase the cultural knowledge
and skills of NIAID-funded research sites to engage effectively with members
of the American Indian/Alaska Native community.
9. Coordinates and conducts trainings for NIAID-funded research sites in
Seattle, WA and Denver, CO.
10. Maintains close communication with protocol teams.
11. Provides hands-on technical assistance and community engagement training
for US HIV clinical trial sites in collaboration with advocacy organizations
and other internal/external systems, partners, and other key stakeholders.
12. Other responsibilities and duties as deemed necessary.
*Major Duties*
The primary responsibility of HANC Legacy Community Engagement Officer (CEO)
is to support and ensure collaborative integration of community engagement
activities into the NIAID -funded HIV clinical trials networks and related
community mobilization efforts. Additionally, the CEO will work
collaboratively with the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center
(NNAAPC) and Seattle-based clinical research site in the implementation and
coordination of all programmatic activities.
The CEO is expected to use initiative in carrying out responsibilities as
defined by the HANC Legacy Project team in collaboration with
representatives of the NIAID -funded HIV clinical trials networks. The CEO
will work to maximize the participation of traditionally underserved
populations and those populations most impacted by HIV in NIAID -sponsored
HIV clinical trials.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in community education, health communication or related
healthcare field with at least three years of relevant experience in public
health or HIV prevention.
Minimum of two years of experience with HIV/AIDS education; in-depth
knowledge of HIV and the disease process; understanding of behavior change
and the communal and cultural factors that shape social norms; experience
working with and organizing urban Indigenous communities; extensive
knowledge of Native historical and cultural factors that inhibit
participation in research; knowledge of community-based participatory
research and the conduct of culturally appropriate and Indigenous-based
research methods; experience developing curricula and delivering
professional level training; experience shaping educational messages and
materials for urban Native communities; knowledge of HIV vaccine development
and research, preferred. Knowledge of and sensitivity to youth, Native
worldviews, two-spirit identity, and cultural and sexual diversity is
essential.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Excellent
organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task, and
attention to detail are critical in this position. Ability to set and meet
expectations. Strong computer skills including word processing, database
programs, and spreadsheets. Demonstrated ability to manage projects and
meet deadlines within a multi-site team environment also required.
*Desired Qualification s (not required)*
A Master's degree in public health, social work, human services or ethnic
studies is preferred.
