COVID, telecommuting and climate change

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned our work world upside down. There are, however, silver linings in all experiences, and our current situation offers some valuable sustainability lessons.

As the world locked down this spring, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fell by an estimated 17% - remarkable decline in such a short timei. A large contributor has been a steep decline in driving.

[""]Oregon's largest contributor to GHG emissions is transportation. Just three months ago, most of us were commuting to work. Depending on fuel efficiency, a round trip commuter driving a conventional fuel car from Portland to Salem emits an estimated 80-100 pounds of carbon dioxide per tripii. That's over 11 tons of CO2 per year - nearly nine times the weight of an average car.

If you're feeling confined at home, take heart - the planet is a bit better off.
