Hello Friends!

Please check out our update for the latest on plug and process loads.

Better Buildings Alliance Plug and Process Loads Technology Research Team
July 2020

Team Updates

  * We hosted a webinar in April titled Automatic Receptacle Controls: Adjusting to New Code Requirements for Plug Load Controls<https://betterbuildingssolutioncenter.energy.gov/webinars/automatic-receptacle-controls-adjusting-new-code-requirements-plug-load-controls>. In this webinar, Harold Jepsen (Legrand), Kelly Cunningham (PG&E), and Marissa Lee (Energy Solutions) presented on the current code requirements for automatic receptacle controls, reviewed how different stakeholders have adjusted to the new requirements, and discussed what future code cycles may hold on the automatic controlled receptacles national data collection effort. The full recording, and past webinars, can be found on the PPL team's On Demand Webinar Library webpage<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbetterbuildingssolutioncenter.energy.gov%2Fwebinars-on-demand%23PPL&data=02%7C01%7CBennett.Doherty%40nrel.gov%7Cc4184a1177e94518e6d908d7dfb96ca5%7Ca0f29d7e28cd4f5484427885aee7c080%7C0%7C0%7C637223859791722131&sdata=szYXu4xL8OcAIuq5b1hMd4NU1z%2BvXKCD5j%2BMSw1zaH8%3D&reserved=0>.
  * The 2020 Better Buildings, Better Plants Summit virtual leadership symposium<https://betterbuildingssolutioncenter.energy.gov/summit> was held June 8-11. The Summit featured a series of timely webinars and peer exchanges. The PPL team was happy to support the Integrated Lighting Campaign and appreciated their highlight of the PPL team during their webinar, The Next Frontier in Lighting: Get Connected with the Integrated Lighting Campaign<https://youtu.be/Zk4bF6ZJ3lY>.
Upcoming Webinars and Events

  * We will be hosting a webinar on July 22 at 11:00am MT/1:00pm ET titled Case in Point: Oregon's Recent Efforts to Reduce Plug Load Energy Consumption<https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/4662380508463774732?source=BBSS4-SC>. In this webinar, Dave Wortman (Oregon Department of Administrative Services) and Stephanie Kruse (Oregon Department of Energy) will present on Oregon's Statewide Plug Load Strategy. They will also discuss the state's adoption of ASHRAE 90.1-2016 energy codes and Oregon's recently adopted Energy and Resource Conservation Policy, which directs agencies to implement several components of the Plug Load Strategy. Register here<https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/4662380508463774732?source=BBSS4-SC> for the webinar.
  * PPL TRT webinars will now include the option for participants to share PPL updates with other webinar attendees. Please email PPL at nrel.gov<mailto:PPL at nrel.gov> if you would like to share an update of your organization's PPL activities on our next webinar (initiatives, best practices, problems, etc.).
Funding Opportunity

  * The U.S. Department of Energy announced a $10 million funding opportunity! Competitively selected state, tribal, and local government awardees will partner with utilities, building owners and operators, and other technology providers to validate novel building technologies in public buildings, including plug load management solutions. Learn more here<https://www.energy.gov/eere/articles/department-energy-releases-new-funding-opportunity-validate-novel-building-technology>.
Research Spotlight

  * The PPL team's conference paper, "Emerging Technologies for Improved Plug Load Management Systems: Learning Behavior Algorithms and Automatic and Dynamic Load Detection," will be published in the ACEEE 2020 Summer Study<https://www.aceee.org/2020-buildings-summer-study-virtual> conference proceedings. Learning behavior algorithms and automatic and dynamic load detection are two technology areas that could accelerate the adoption of plug load management systems by reducing labor demands and providing additional energy efficiency and nonenergy benefits. In this paper, we present our findings on the current state of these two technologies based on a review of existing research and patents as well as a series of interviews with companies working in the plug load space.
