Be Creative @ your library
These certificates are for children and teens (0-18 years old) who complete your library's summer reading program or read/listened to 10 books between May 15th and September 15th. Students may receive a certificate when they submit a list of the 10 books to their librarian, teacher, or reading specialist. Lists must be signed by the parent/guardian/childcare provider. Libraries are not required to keep these lists, but may want to track how many are submitted to include in their summer reading statistics and on the summer reading survey put out by OLA's Children Services Division every Fall.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
This is the third year the Oregon Department of Education, Oregon State Library, and Oregon Library Association have coordinated their efforts to provide a joint Oregon Summer Reading Certificate with funding from the Oregon Education Association. This effort signifies the commitment of schools and libraries to the education of Oregon's youth.
In the past, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) awarded Summer Reading Certificates for students who read ten books over the summer. The certificates were distributed via education service districts, school librarians, and public libraries. Nothing has changed about this program, except for the certificate. The certificate now has the national Collaborative Summer Library Program artwork on it and is signed by the State Librarian, Jim Scheppke, and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Susan Castillo.
Public libraries will award Oregon Summer Reading Certificates to children and teens who complete their library summer reading program or who provide a list of the ten books they read over the summer. Libraries are not required to keep records of the names of participating children nor the lists of books they read.
Educators may request the Oregon Department of Education to send certificates for their classroom or school. Students may also receive certificates by mailing their list of completed books signed by a parent, guardian, or teacher and including a return address to Stephanie Parks, Oregon Department of Education, 255 Capitol St. NE, Salem, OR 97310.
