Hi! I just received permission to forward the following email from Michelle, a Reading for Health Families (RFHF) participant. Michelle is using what she learned from RFHF to improve the summer reading program for children birth to 5 years old and their parents. What a great idea!

Subject: summer reading program

Hi Katie,
I just wanted to let you know what the Hermiston Public Library is doing for this years Summer Reading Program. Every year we give out a folder to the children that has all of the information about the summer reading program inside. Previous years we have just had 2 folders, pre-school-2nd and 3rd-5th grades. We thought this year would be a great time to make our 3rd group, birth-5 years. So we have added the 6 early literacy skills along with activities they can do with each: early talkers, talkers, and pre-readers. We have also added the activity page for print awareness and phonological awareness from the Every Child Ready to Read @ your library (ECRR) binders, along with "Say it Slow" "Say it Fast" activities. We are excited to see how the parents react with this information and it was so easy to put together since all of the information is in the binders. Maybe some of the other libraries would like to try this with their summer reading program.

If you are interested in improving your summer reading program for children 0-5 years old and their parents, the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) website has resources available to CSLP members at: http://www.cslpreads.org/learning-tools/family-literacy.html.

All Oregon public, volunteer, and tribal libraries are members of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), and receive a free summer reading manual. To get the most out of your membership, create an account on the CSLP website (http://www.cslpreads.org/) and you will be able to access additional summer reading resources. CSLP membership dues and manual fees are paid for by the State Library with LSTA funds. Summer reading manuals are distributed by OLA’s Children’s Services Division.
