Pew continues to survey the American public regarding their views on public libraries. Here's the latest report, "Libraries 2016".

*         Executive summary: http://www.pewinternet.org/2016/09/09/libraries-2016/

* A portrait of those who have never been to libraries: http://www.pewinternet.org/2016/09/09/a-portrait-of-those-who-have-never-been-to-libraries/

*         Complete report (PDF): http://www.pewinternet.org/files/2016/09/PI_2016.09.09_Libraries-2016_FINAL.pdf

* More of their reports on libraries: http://www.pewinternet.org/topics/libraries/

Here are some things that stood out to me that may be of interest to children and teen librarians:

* 69% agree "a lot" that libraries provide a safe place for people to spend time and 20% agree "somewhat"

* 58% agree "a lot" that libraries create educational opportunities for people of all ages and 29% agree "somewhat"

* 49% agree "a lot" that libraries help spark creativity among young people and 31% agree "somewhat"

* 47% agree "a lot" that libraries provide a trusted place for people to learn about new technologies and 32% agree "somewhat"

* 37% agree "a lot" that libraries help people decide what information they can trust and 37% agree "somewhat"

* The percent of libraries users who attended programs, classes, or lecture increased from 17% in 2015 to 27% in 2016

* 61% of library computer users ages 16 and older are doing research for school or work

* People in poverty are much more likely to never have visited a library in their life.

* Latinos are much more likely to never have visited a library in their life.

* People in rural areas are just as likely to never have visited a library than people in urban and suburban areas.

How might these relate to youth services?

* Are your policies related to safety up to date? They may include acceptable behavior, unattended children, internet access.

* Have you and your co-workers learned about mandatory reporting of child abuse?

* Are your programs educational and/or sparking creativity?

* Do you offer programs that aren't included in this study that should be (STEM/STEAM perhaps)? If so, why aren't they covered in this study? How are you getting the work out?

* Are you offering programs on new technology for children and teens? If not, is this something you want to consider?

* How are you helping people learn to identify trust-worthy sources of information when you provide reference interviews and other services?

* How are you helping children and teens with researching? Lots of schools don't have teacher librarians so aren't offering information literacy instruction. Is this a need in your community that you could support?

* How are you making your library welcoming and inviting to youth and families in poverty? How are you making it easy for them to use your services or participate in your programs?

* How are you making your library welcoming and inviting to Latino families? Do you have materials, resources, and services in Spanish and that are culturally relevant?

* How are you communicating and promoting all these great things you're doing to people in your community?
