Hi everyone,

As you may have heard, the White House budget that was released today would
completely defund IMLS. Don't think this only has effects in Washington or
on libraries that win competitive IMLS grants -- IMLS gives millions of
dollars directly to individual states, and in Oregon, that amounted to $2.2
million in 2016, which funded Spanish storytimes, OBOB, OSLIS, access to
government information, tech-based staff development, and so much more
<https://www.imls.gov/grants/grants-state/state-profiles/oregon>. IMLS
funding also goes to the State Library, tribal libraries, OMSI, the
Portland Children's Museum, the Museum of the Oregon Territory, the High
Desert Museum, and -- again -- so much more.

There's information in the email below on steps you can take to help save
IMLS -- and all the library services and programs in Oregon that it funds.
I know I'll be calling my representatives tomorrow.

Gretchen

The White House budget
<http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/16/politics/trump-budget-cuts/> that was
released today calls for eliminating the Institute of Museum & Library
Services <https://www.imls.gov/> (IMLS), the only federal agency charged
with providing support to the nation's hundreds of thousands of libraries
and museums. ALA <http://www.ala.org> and YALSA need your help to ensure
that IMLS is saved, because without libraries teens will not have the
resources and support they need to succeed in school and prepare for
college, careers, and life. Here's what you can do right now:

   - Use the sample messages in this document
   <http://www.ala.org/yalsa/sites/ala.org.yalsa/files/content/Save%20Federal%20Funding%20for%20Libraries.docx>
   to contact the offices of your members of Congress
   - Share your photo or story via this form
   <http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/FBm39cf5yegRN3040TPsc80> of how
   support from IMLS has enabled you and your library to help the teens in
   your community. YALSA will use this information to advocate against the
   elimination of IMLS
   - Sign up via this web page <http://cqrcengage.com/ala/home> to receive
   updates on the #SaveIMLS effort
   - Add your name to this online petition
   <http://action.everylibrary.org/preserve_funding_for_the_neh_nea_and_pbs>
   being circulated by EveryLibrary <http://action.everylibrary.org/>
   - Start planning how you, your teen patrons, and library advocates will
   participate in National Library Legislative Day <http://www.ala.org/nlld>
   on May 2. Use the resources on YALSA's wiki
   <http://wikis.ala.org/yalsa/index.php/National_Library_Legislative_Day>
   - Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to do the above as well

Don’t know much about IMLS? Here’s a quick overview: through IMLS, every
state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. territories
receive funding to support their state’s libraries and museums. In FY14
the total funding IMLS distributed to states and territories was
$154,800,000. In addition, IMLS offers competitive grant opportunities
that individual libraries and museums can apply for. In FY14 they awarded
594 grants (from 1,299 applications) totaling more than $54,700,000. Visit
the IMLS site <https://www.imls.gov/grants/grants-state/state-profiles> to
see how much funding your state receives from them.

Want to take further action to support teens and libraries? We salute
you! Check out the free online resources

and libraries easy.
