Announcing Fostering Grade Level Reading!

What: Fostering Grade Level Reading (Fostering Readers) will be a set of online resources for library staff and other out-of-school time providers to use to plan, implement, and evaluate research-based literacy programs for K-3 grade students who are learning how to read and/or not reading at grade level. Fostering Readers is being developed to be linguistically and culturally responsive to Spanish-speaking and Latino children and families. Read the attached project description for more information.

Why: Public libraries have a reputation of offering research-based early literacy programs. Many preschool storytime families who think their child is ready to learn how to read ask, "What's Next? What programs does the library offer for my child who is beginning to read?" Fostering Readers will empower library staff to offer research-based programs that support children learning how to read and struggling readers in K-3 grade. Reading at grade level at the end of third grade is a significant indicator of future success. Library staff will be able to promote Fostering Readers as research-based literacy programs to families, teachers, and community organizations working to increase the number of children reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

Who: Read the attachment to meet the Project Team. They were selected through a competitive request for proposal and interview process conducted by WCCLS and OregonASK.

When: If WCCLS and OregonASK get another LSTA grant to implement a pilot project, then Fostering Reading resources will be available in July 2019. If we don't get a second grant, the resources will be available in October 2018.

Where: The Fostering Readers resources will be available online for free to anyone. They will be heavily promoted when they become available.

How: WCCLS, in partnership with OregonASK, received a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the State Library of Oregon to contract with subject area experts to conduct the research and create the Fostering Readers resources.

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to write a letter in support of year two LSTA grant application (letters are due to me on March 16).

Thanks,
