Hello library folks serving kids and teens,

Summer Reading is getting real right about now - hope you were able to take a break yesterday and enjoy your holiday. Here's what I was working on in June here at the State Library. If you've got questions/idea/suggestions/comments, please let me know!

Highlights:

* I've spent a lot of time communicating with county GIS specialists because Ready to Ready formulas are partially based on square miles. We want every library to get the correct 2019 Ready to Ready grant amounts. These are still in draft form as we wait for information on new library districts in Douglas County -woohoo! - but we will have 2019 Ready to Read applications up this month on the State Library website. I know, you're all just dying to fill those out RIGHT NOW. :)

* I met with the STEM HUB<http://stemoregon.org/stem-hubs-oregon/> Partnerships Director and Dept. of Education Science folks to learn about how they see STEM hubs providing opportunities for science learning. Please let me know if you do anything with your STEM HUB, even if it's just that you've been in contact with them!

* I was able to present to Oregon's Early Learning Council<https://oregonearlylearning.com/early-learning-council-members> about all the amazing work you are doing to support early literacy in your communities. I want to give a shout out to the following: St. Helens Library (Gretchen), Washington County (Katie & Bryce), Ready2Learn<https://www.ready2learnoregon.org/home> in Baker, Grant, Umatilla and more (Erin, Jennifer, and others) and Beaverton's Ready Set, Kindergarten<http://nwcentral.org/ola-conference-2018/a-bright-future-for-every-kindergartner-hosting-a-ready-set-kindergarten-program-at-your-library/> Team (Victoria, Carson, & Araceli) - because I shared examples of your early literacy work with the Council and they appreciated it!
Library Visits:

* June 5th, Deschutes Public Library, Redmond. Read Create Play with Heather McNeil and Carly Garzon-Vegas

* June 6th Crook County Library, Prineville. 2017 Ready to Read Award to Crook County with Buzzy Neilsen, Jane Scheppke, Shun-Sho Fong and all the other wonderful library staff here.
Mary Ryan shared with me an awesome dinosaur-themed-race-car-building-STEM-program that was super enticing for young dinosaur fans in Prineville. If you want to hear more, she'd be happy to share more about it! You can get in touch with Mary at: mryan at crooklib.org<mailto:mryan at crooklib.org>

Something I'm Learning:
To prepare for presenting to the Early Learning Council, I went through the Early Learning Guidelines<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/FullDayK/Documents/ODE_EarlyLearningStandards_final.pdf> and was able to list an example for EVERY.SINGLE.GUIDELINE from an Oregon library doing that very thing to build literacy. My takeaway: You are doing critically important, foundational work for our youngest learners - Thank you.

Happy July and please know that we are all rooting for you over here during your busiest season!

Best,

Greta B
