Hi Great Brain!

We've got one heck of a stumper that needs your help because we're not making any headway on it ourselves! It's a kids chapter book that was available at least 7-8 years ago. Here's the details:

- Set in a desert; features ant colonies, a boy, a stone

- A boy is playing a video game, when his mom unplugs it to get him to go to school - the title of the book may be the name of the videogame

- The boy is bullied in the story

- A Native American gives the boy a turquoise stone that shrinks the boy to the size of an ant

- The boy can talk to the ants and there's something about a fight with another ant colony and a dwarf ant that is smaller than a regular ant

The book does not seem to be The City Under the Back Steps by Lampman. Any thoughts??
Thank you so much for your help!

Hi everyone

I had a patron today looking for a book from her childhood. She read it in the early 90s. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

*         Picture book

* Features a ballerina who lives in a big city high rise. She has a rooftop garden that the patron remembers vividly.

* Also a cowgirl who sleeps under the stars.

* The patron thinks there might have been a theme of girls can be anything they want to be.

Thanks everyone!

Hello! The Oregon Reader's Choice Award Committee is looking for new members, including 3 ORA members, 2 CSD members, and 1 OYAN member. Members on this committee have the opportunity to focus their reading on a specific division (grades 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12), decide on the final list of 8 books in their division, create booktalks, potentially co-present at the spring Oregon Library Association Conference, and get to know other people around Oregon who are just as passionate about getting great books into the hands of kids and teens!

One of the great things about being an ORCA committee member is that members are not required to attend any in-person meetings--all of our discussions are through Google docs. However, something to be aware of is that we do a lot of reading, and the reading, online discussions, and preparing for the OLA presentation can make it really busy from February through April.

Check out our website at https://oregonreaderschoiceaward.wordpress.com/ <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__oregonreaderschoiceaward.wordpress.com_&d=DwMFaQ&c=pslXprxdtWHFBuj41-AaSLF1gHAT1_cek1PvLND777Q&r=63q7r7MctwqqC5dLowC20FFtAr28GpbqYY7Tr01Aj6Y&m=oGbNhy1dYdAKeRc3fW22TN5Hj5CMqXjsGSGcCVEhZlI&s=8IT0bDB0bVFy5P0pscRGH8OwWVvE-qBIpmI6YOD1-Ds&e=>

If you have any questions, shoot me an email at orca at olaweb.org. If you are interested in being an ORCA Committee member, please email me at the above email address by Friday, August 31 with answers to the following questions:

1) Why do you want to be a member of the Oregon Reader's Choice Award Committee?
2) Do you currently, or have you in the past, served on a book award committee? If yes, please briefly describe your experience.
3) There are 3 divisions that members read for: grades 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12. Please list your top 2 division choices that you would prefer to read for.
4) Are you a member of the Oregon Reading Association, OLA - Children's Services Division (CSD), or OLA - Oregon Young Adult Network (OYAN)? Please specify which one(s) you are a member of.

Best,
MacKenzie

Thanks to an LSTA grant to Oregon Battle of the Books we have sets of elementary, middle school, and high school titles for your public library.
This grant was first offered to schools participating in OBOB. While 426 schools applied and will receive books, I do have some extras.
I'm excited that we can now offer books to public libraries as well.

You may apply for only 1 set in each division (elementary, middle school, high school). This means you could apply for book sets for ALL 3 divisions (44 books!).
Please send in a separate survey response for each division you wish to apply for. You will have to re-paste the link into your browser, but it will work.

Apply here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MGYF63N

The grant will close when I have enough applicants (70 for elementary, 73 for middle, 27 for high school).

Paperback books (and a few hardback) will be sent to libraries from Ingram by the end of September (thank you LSTA grant!)

To complete this survey/application you must know your library's address, and your email address.
It's the easiest application ever. It should take less than 4 minutes.

Looking forward to sending you books,

Korie

Hello library folks serving kids and teens,

Summer Reading is getting real right about now - hope you were able to take a break yesterday and enjoy your holiday. Here's what I was working on in June here at the State Library. If you've got questions/idea/suggestions/comments, please let me know!

Highlights:

* I've spent a lot of time communicating with county GIS specialists because Ready to Ready formulas are partially based on square miles. We want every library to get the correct 2019 Ready to Ready grant amounts. These are still in draft form as we wait for information on new library districts in Douglas County -woohoo! - but we will have 2019 Ready to Read applications up this month on the State Library website. I know, you're all just dying to fill those out RIGHT NOW. :)

* I met with the STEM HUB<http://stemoregon.org/stem-hubs-oregon/> Partnerships Director and Dept. of Education Science folks to learn about how they see STEM hubs providing opportunities for science learning. Please let me know if you do anything with your STEM HUB, even if it's just that you've been in contact with them!

* I was able to present to Oregon's Early Learning Council<https://oregonearlylearning.com/early-learning-council-members> about all the amazing work you are doing to support early literacy in your communities. I want to give a shout out to the following: St. Helens Library (Gretchen), Washington County (Katie & Bryce), Ready2Learn<https://www.ready2learnoregon.org/home> in Baker, Grant, Umatilla and more (Erin, Jennifer, and others) and Beaverton's Ready Set, Kindergarten<http://nwcentral.org/ola-conference-2018/a-bright-future-for-every-kindergartner-hosting-a-ready-set-kindergarten-program-at-your-library/> Team (Victoria, Carson, & Araceli) - because I shared examples of your early literacy work with the Council and they appreciated it!
Library Visits:

* June 5th, Deschutes Public Library, Redmond. Read Create Play with Heather McNeil and Carly Garzon-Vegas

* June 6th Crook County Library, Prineville. 2017 Ready to Read Award to Crook County with Buzzy Neilsen, Jane Scheppke, Shun-Sho Fong and all the other wonderful library staff here.
Mary Ryan shared with me an awesome dinosaur-themed-race-car-building-STEM-program that was super enticing for young dinosaur fans in Prineville. If you want to hear more, she'd be happy to share more about it! You can get in touch with Mary at: mryan at crooklib.org<mailto:mryan at crooklib.org>

Something I'm Learning:
To prepare for presenting to the Early Learning Council, I went through the Early Learning Guidelines<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/FullDayK/Documents/ODE_EarlyLearningStandards_final.pdf> and was able to list an example for EVERY.SINGLE.GUIDELINE from an Oregon library doing that very thing to build literacy. My takeaway: You are doing critically important, foundational work for our youngest learners - Thank you.

Happy July and please know that we are all rooting for you over here during your busiest season!

Best,

Greta B
