As Jen Maurer alludes to in her email below, the new Oregon Health Education Standards<http://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/health/Documents/2016ORHEStandards.pdf> could be a relevant resource if some people in your community are concerned about George by Alex Gino and its inclusion in OBOB.

George is in the 3rd-5th Grade Division for OBOB so I copied and pasted a few of the Grade Three Performance Indicators of Oregon?s new health standards that may be particularly relevant:

? HE.1.3.6 Identify human reproductive systems including reproductive anatomy and function.

? HE.1.3.10 Define sexual orientation.

? HE.1.3.11 Recognize differences and similarities of how individuals identify regarding gender or sexual orientation.

? HE.1.3.12 Recognize the importance of treating others with respect regarding gender expression and sexual orientation.

? HE.2.3.6 Recognize how friends, family, media, society and culture influence how people think they should act on the basis of their gender.

? HE.3.3.5 Recognize people at home, school or in the community who can provide medically accurate information and/or support about healthy sexuality, including sexual orientation and gender identity

? HE.4.3.5 Describe ways to communicate respectfully with and about people of all gender identities, gender expressions and sexual orientations.

? HE.7.3.4 List ways to treat yourself and others with dignity and respect, with regard to race, ability, other identities, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation.

? HE.8.3.3 List ways students can work together to promote dignity and respect for all people.

Thanks,
Katie Anderson

Hi,

Please see the email below about the 2016 K-12 Health Education Standards that go into effect next school year. The announcement was sent to listservs for Oregon physical education and health teachers. You may want to become familiar with the standards to see if your collection supports them. For example, gender expression is covered in HE1. Here?s the kindergarten indicator: HE.1.K.8 Recognize the importance of treating others with respect including gender expression. The 2016 standards supersede the 2012 version as of next school year.

Also, I encourage you to read through the Oregon Safe Schools Report mentioned in the email below. It?s a good reminder about why some of the new health standards are important to cover.

Subject: [OR_PE_Teachers] OR Safe Schools Report & Comprehensive Sexual Health

Hi All ? some great information below!

Education is one of the most effective tools we have in our toolbox to promote school safety. With the new K-12 Health Education Standards, which go into effect at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is working towards ensuring that communities and schools are safe and violence-free for all.

The 6th annual Oregon Safe Schools & Communities Coalition (OSSCC ) State of Safe Schools report analyzed 2017 data on Oregon 8th and 11th graders and found that the physical and emotional wellbeing of young people in Oregon is worsening. Bias-based bullying, sexual harassment, and fear based absences are on the rise in schools?especially related to gender identity or sexual orientation. The report outlines some research based practices to improve safety and enhance the learning environment in Oregon schools, including implementing inclusive comprehensive sexuality education curriculum, training teachers, and building trauma-informed classrooms.

The new Health Standards include age-appropriate student performance indicators for health skills at each grade level that help to promote student safety and well-being. Many of the new standards focus on comprehensive sexuality education (CSE). CSE teaches students positive attitudes and behaviors related to healthy relationships and sexuality by using medically accurate, age-appropriate, and culturally-inclusive materials, language, and strategies. Additionally, Oregon Law requires that instruction recognizes the diversity of sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expression, as well as focuses on affirmative consent. Teaching students about health topics, including human sexuality, and supporting them to develop skills in health literacy, healthy communication, and decision-making enables them to learn, stay in school, and achieve throughout life.

For support on implementing Comprehensive Sexuality Education, please contact Sasha Grenier at sasha.grenier at state.or.us<mailto:sasha.grenier at state.or.us>. 503-947-5689
