> The Paducah Independent School System operates within the city limits of Paducah, Kentucky, the county seat of McCracken County. The school district has been participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture?s summer feeding program for approximately four to five years. The school system offers its students 23 feeding sites, many of which are mobile and brought to students at different locations around Paducah neighborhoods via bus or van. In an interview with the Paducah Sun newspaper, Paducah Independent Schools Director of Food and Nutrition Services Lynsi Barnhill told reporters the school served over 36,000 meals in the summer of 2017.

> For the last two summers, McCracken County Public Library staff have followed the Paducah Public School system?s vans to mobile sites to distribute free books and summer reading logs along with the school?s free lunches. This partnership allows the school system and the library to work together to feed students? bodies and minds during the summer months when school is not in session. Library workers from both the Youth Services and the Adult Services staff volunteered to make the program a success. The library donated over 1500 books to Paducah Independent School System students this year alone.

Many of the activities are inclusive as is, while others only need slight modifications to work for special populations. Here are just a few activities you can try at your library.

> This program is very simple, but if you have children with a latex allergy, you will need latex-free balloons. When doing this program with blind or visually impaired kids, there are several options. Before you begin, if you have a variety of colored balloons, let them choose. Every child, regardless of disability, will likely have a favorite color. Some may want to blow up their balloon, while others may want to only let it go. You will likely need to tape the balloon onto the straw, but you can give the child a choice of how they want it taped. Also ask them in what direction they want to be from the ?planet? (aka the person holding the other end of the string). They may want to be above, straight across, below, or any other direction from the ?planet.? In the end it?s all about having fun (and seeing if your rocket makes it or flies off into space)!

> Learning about binary code can be fun, fashionable, and accessible! To make this one accessible, try providing a variety of textured or sizes of beads. It is harder for children with visual impairments to feel the different patterns if all the beads are the same size and texture. Having different textures or sizes can also help those who can see determine differences in the code better. Note: There is a pin option, but it would be recommended for tweens or teens.

> The Mars Rovers activity is great for many types of disabilities. You may need to do some modifications to the set up or the instructions in order to make it more accessible. If you have someone who is blind and is ?Mission Control? try using tactile directions to help them help their ?Rover? counterpart navigate. This can done with magnets, puff paint, or even pins in a corkboard. If your ?Rover? is in a wheel chair, but can use his or her arms and hands easily, try giving them a grabber tool to help them pick up the item. Having a grabber can be fun for any child to use who is playing the ?Rover.?
