Dear Children’s Librarians/CSD Community,
I wanted to be sure you received word of the passing of one of Oregon’s great contributors to our community, Sybilla “Billy” Cook, who was honored with the Lampman Award in 2016. The following announcement was shared today on Billy’s Facebook page:
"To Sybilla's Many FB Friends,
My name is Faye Getz Cook <https://www.facebook.com/faywaycook?__tn__=%2CdK-R-R&eid=ARCHrX56vhpKgPmbQUDlPcCqMiZSSvp9YM4zlJALl4_X2BQagyjMSWJtMG30ArUvurgDLlXJalaULasx&fref=mentions>, and I'm Billy's daughter-in-law, married to her eldest son, Hal Cook. Please excuse the impersonal nature of this post, but there are so many of you and I don't begin to know you all. Billy passed away on Sunday, October 27. It was a peaceful death. She went in her sleep at home with her middle son Bob Cook <https://www.facebook.com/bob.cook.39108?__tn__=%2CdK-R-R&eid=ARAmGnlCLk0mRZ9X6cFONyjg5dP9PnnzlO1FlZ21ua8agE7r9Xk1GyjuRTu1TEZcfNypQ-e5aSQs4F3d&fref=mentions> sitting by her bed. She had a fall in August and pinched some nerves. It was difficult for her to carry on the active life she so loved, and as the cliche goes, it was time. She was 89.
Right now, arrangements are tentative, but those of you in the Portland area can attend a remembrance that is provisionally scheduled on the afternoon of November 9 at Mirabella, where she lived. She had many favorite charities, especially Planned Parenthood and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Of course, if you knew Billy, you'd know she always appreciated any cause working toward the defeat of the present occupant of the White House!
Billy was a teacher, a librarian, a writer, and a social butterfly. But most of all, she loved her family, her three sons Hal, Bob, and Ray Cook <https://www.facebook.com/ray.cook.5623?__tn__=%2CdK-R-R&eid=ARBXre0EvQbhjb0nJFxSeRC_g43KxXZUi_Ek0im4S2h6ubGzvF-54Y909GHWZbskDfDXO-BecctMZAVh&fref=mentions>, her grandchildren, great grandchild, nieces and nephews, her late husband John, and her virtual nieces and nephews the Caton and Messenger clans. And she loved every one of you also. The world is less fun without her.
Her family invites you to share your memories here and hope you take the opportunity to make friends with each other. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to contact me on Facebook Messenger or if that fails, I will try to visit this page several times a day and get back to you.
Once again, thank you all for being her friends.
