Hello folks,
School Library Journal has made their opening keynote conversation from last week’s Day of Dialogue freely available, see below. (As well as making all digital access freely available, please take advantage of this content while it’s open if you can!)
Additionally, at yesterday’s office hours (notes linked here in top box<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/c.php?g=1011618&p=7362153>) there were questions about how libraries were responding to current events on their social media channels. I wanted to share Cook Memorial’s (LaGrande, Union County) facebook post from yesterday<https://www.facebook.com/CookMemLib/posts/3131775616876782>.
Best,
Greta

There is, as some have noted, much work ahead of us. Toward that end, SLJ’s editors have assembled these links.

Dear reader,
There is, as some have noted, much work ahead of us. Toward that end, SLJ’s editors have assembled these links.
Part of our Great Books series, Social Justice: Fifteen titles to address inequity, equality, and organizing for young readers<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct2_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc> considers youth activism, with titles that explore racism, sexism, and immigration. Geared for middle grade readers, the list encompasses poetry and biography as well as fiction. An earlier booklist honors the long tradition of protest<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct3_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc> as an act of civil responsibility, from Dolores Huerta to Harvey Milk.
We don’t do this too often—as I mentioned at the kickoff of our virtual Day of Dialog<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct4_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc>—featuring a single book as a cover story. But Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct5_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc> is an important book, and needed right now. Here’s Nikole Hannah-Jones’s interview<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct6_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc> of the book’s authors, Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, who presented the opening keynote, now available to view<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct7_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc>.
“The Hate U Give needs to be required in every classroom in America,” declared<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct8_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc> author Dante Medema on Friday. SLJ spoke to author Angie Thomas after the debut of her first novel about making the personal political<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct9_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc>. Thomas’s insight resonates today, as does David Bowles on Writing for Border Kids in the Age of Trump<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct10_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc>.
In her essay on writing and reading in the Trump era, author Samira Ahmed challenges librarians<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct11_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc> to use their power to create a more just world. “I’m asking you to examine the role we adults play in creating such a brutally unfair world for our children and to do what you can to change it,” she writes. “It starts with a conversation. It starts with challenging yourself.”
Indeed, as the brutal murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have roiled the nation, forcing a reckoning on systemic racism, educators are taking a hard look. Academics Nell K. Duke and Ernest Morrell have called on the profession<https://mediasource.actonservice.com/acton/ct/10574/s-2880-2006/Bct/l-10e9/l-10e9:aa1/ct12_0/1?sid=TV2%3AaGrkd7csc> to make educational equity a driving force in their practice.
