Hello everybody,
National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Jason Reynolds is doing a pretty awesome writing series<https://guides.loc.gov/jason-reynolds/grab-the-mic/wrr> through Library of Congress, mostly via Instagram<https://www.instagram.com/jasonreynolds83/?hl=en> with some on Twitter<https://twitter.com/JasonReynolds83?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor>. My favorite thing from this series so far is he suggested kids write letters to themselves from their heroes. One kid wrote a letter to himself from Samuel L. Jackson, who then responded on social media. You can also see Jason today at the #everywherebookfest<https://everywherebookfest.com/> at 10:30 on Instagram Live. To me, this feels like a big treat for making it to Friday.
Another treat coming your way is that we are releasing LSTA funds - not CARES act funds - to go directly to libraries, with a grant application that is approximately 400 characters long. No joke. We are first directing this towards our smallest libraries, and intending to focus at least 40% of funds on serving kids. See Ross’ email below and let us know if you have questions.
I want to say thanks to everyone for being present this week. Especially thanks to Betty Simpson from Dallas who shared at Tuesday’s check-in that she hoped we would remember to be patient with ourselves in this moment, that we can’t do everything we want to right now for our patrons and that is okay.
Take good care,
Greta

Subject: Announcing COVID-19 Response mini-grants for libraries!
Hello Oregon library directors and other contacts!
We’re pleased to announce the State Library Board has redirected approximately $100,000 of Oregon's FFY2019 LSTA allotment from other LSTA projects and programs to be used for COVID-19 response mini-grants. Any legally established public, academic, school, or tribal library in Oregon, as well as special libraries with 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in Oregon may apply, and each library may choose which amount best suits their needs from the following: $500, $1,500 or $3,000 - your choice!
Applications will open on Monday, May 4, 2020, first to the following group of eligible entities:
● Federally recognized tribes, K-12 schools, and special libraries
● Legally established public libraries with permanent staffing levels up to 5 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees (as reported in the 2018-19 Oregon Public Library Statistical Report<https://www.oregon.gov/library/libraries/Pages/Statistics.aspx>)
● Academic libraries at institutions with student FTE enrollment of 1,000 or fewer (based on Fall 2018 enrollment data<https://www.oregon.gov/highered/research/Pages/student-data.aspx> from the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission)
Applications will open for all other libraries on May 13, pending the level of interest we receive from the initial group, and will remain open until all funds have been awarded. The State Library of Oregon has set a goal that at least 40% of total funds awarded will go towards efforts supporting children, K-12 students, and youth services. Grants will otherwise be awarded on a rolling basis, limited to one grant per library/library system, school, or tribe.
For more information and instructions on how to apply, please visit our COVID-19 Response Grants page<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/lstagrants/covid19> and find links to contact us with your questions.
Be well,
