[kids-lib] Summer Reading & Camping Theme Considerations

Hi all,

I wanted to share this recent article about the complexities of camping history<https://www.newyorker.com/books/under-review/the-confounding-politics-of-camping-in-america?utm_source=pocket-newtab> in the US, especially given the theme of our summer reading programming this year. We've gotten helpful feedback that we as library staff should be aware not everyone feels welcome in outdoor public spaces such as state or national parks, and the history of national parks and Native Americans in particular is complex. This feedback was a helpful reminder for me that no matter what theme we go with each summer, we will always need to be evaluating it for how it may unintentionally exclude some members of our community, and we will need to work to minimize those exclusions and be as inclusive as possible.
