Workshop description:

Google Analytics is a free web analytics tool that can provide detailed
information about how your users are interacting with your web pages. Learn
how libraries can use this free tool to improve your web resources in this
hands-on training, led by two web developers and a librarian.

 

Google Analytics provides statistical reports that allow you to measure your
web traffic, gather aggregate data about who your visitors are and how they
are using your web resources, and much more. While Google Analytics was
designed primarily for use with commercial web sites, libraries can use
these detailed reports to detect trends in how library web pages are being
used.

 

Using examples of Google Analytics reports from library web sites, the
workshop presenters will discuss

 

. Why web analytics are important for libraries

. Google Analytics basics - features and functions

. Interpreting Google Analytics reports

. Creating custom reports

. Goal tracking

. Data reliability and privacy

. Using Google Analytics data to guide web site refinements

 

This training is aimed at beginning and intermediate Google Analytics users.


 

You are encouraged to register your own web site for a Google Analytics
report in advance of the workshop (or have your system administrator do so).
Bring a printout of your report, or be prepared to access your report during
the workshop, so you can begin the work of making data-driven decisions
about how to refine your web resources. 

 

 

Presenters:

Paul Irving received a B.A. in Political Science at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in 1990 and has a background in social service and
community outreach. His commitment to the community-building power of the
Internet led him to study networking technology and eventually found Insite
Web Publishing. As a legally-blind person, Paul has a special interest in
Web usability and accessibility issues.

 

Paul has consulted on dozens of Internet and intranet projects in key
positions including project management, marketing, design, information
architecture, technical lead, Web development, publication and
post-production. Paul has valuable experience developing standards-based
websites that are compliant with the World Wide Web Consortium's Web
Accessibility Initiative. His professional focus is on website information
architecture (IA). He has consulted on and deployed large-scale website IA
for clients such as Clark County, Washington, City of Kent, Washington,
Kalamazoo Public Library and the Multnomah County Library. Paul is also
responsible for the redesign of Northwest Central (nwcentral.org).

 

Paul will be assisted by Dave Lippert, PCC Digital Services Coordinator, and
Roberta Richards, PCC Reference and Instruction Librarian.
