Susan Stone is a librarian acting as a teacher on special assignment (TOSA) helping to oversee libraries in Portland Public Schools. She's the next president-elect of OASL, helped draft the questions for the new library portion of district continuous improvement plans, and is serving on the OLA/OASL Joint Committee, among many other things. Last night she was recognized for her outstanding service at the PPS Board meeting. Congrats to Susan and yeah for the great PR about what school librarians do!

Subject: oasl-all: Susan Stone appreciation

Hi Library Friends!

I want to share the news that our own Susan Stone was honored at the PPS Board Meeting last night in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week. Susan was nominated by Michael Williams, a colleague she works with at the district and I'm quoting his nomination here:

What qualities has this nominee demonstrated that sets them apart from other PPS Teachers?

Susan Stone is working in a specific field that is vital to the success of students yet is being cut throughout the district. She battles against misconceptions of what a librarian is and does (A librarian is a teacher who plans and delivers curriculum while supporting the needs of teachers and students and maintaining vast resources).

In this effort she maintains a positive and active spirit to improve the practice of librarians and classroom teachers throughout PPS. She works tirelessly with district leadership to dispel myths about the roles of librarians in an effort to turn the tide of firing librarians and replacing them with parent volunteers or untrained employees. She also continually works to improve her knowledge and practice with instructional technology, literacy and content standards, and accommodation practices for high achieving and struggling students. She in turns shares this to other curriculum leaders and teachers throughout the district.

She is the picture of hope and drive for all PPS teachers and students.

What else would you like us to know about this Teacher?

Susan is involved in programs at the state level where she participates in expanding her practice and understanding. In these organizations she also leads sessions for others to learn from her.

As a result, while she focuses her energy on improving PPS practices, she also has influence across the state.

While PPS has many great people working for the district, you will not find a more dedicated, caring, highly skilled employee than Susan Stone.

This is such a wonderful testament, especially coming from a non-library staffer and well-respected teacher.

Please join me in congratulating Susan on this well-deserved recognition.
