To: ALACOUN <alacoun at ala.org>

 Dear Councilors:

All members are invited to join us for ALA’s first ALA Virtual “Town Hall,”
which will be held on Wednesday, June 1st from 3:00 - 4:30pm CDT on the ALA
i-Linc webinar platform.

The Town Hall will feature discussions about e-books and the future of
electronic access in libraries, a presentation by President Roberta Stevens
on advocacy initiatives during the past year, and an update from me on the
"State of the Association" and our new 2015 Strategic Plan. A special
"Open Forum" time will also allow participants to ask questions about any
Association topics.

This Town Hall is designed to solicit ideas, comments and questions about
the Association from members. To foster this, an ALA Connect group is being
set up and pre-loaded with reports from the President, Treasurer and myself
so that anyone can comment and discuss them in advance of the Town Hall.
Reports from the Task Force on Equitable Access to Electronic Content
(EQUACC) co-chairs Michael Porter and Linda Crowe, and the OITP e-books
Subcommittee Chair Bonnie Tijerina will also be posted in advance of their
presentations for review and comment. Time will be reserved during each
segment of the Town Hall for participants’ questions, comments and reactions
to these reports and the live presentations.

Questions and comments will be taken in advance via the Connect group and
during the Town Hall by either voice or chat. The i-Linc platform does
support participation by voice, but specific system requirements need to be
met by participants (Information about system requirements will be provided
when registration opens on April 27th). Please note that all participants
will have access to live chat for the Q&A sessions. I-Linc also supports a
polling function that will allow participants to immediately respond
to proposals and presentations. The Town Hall will be simultaneously
captioned for participants on an open access website, and an archive of the
event will be available for streaming via the ALA website and Connect group
within two days after the event.

Advance registration is required to be a participant in the Town Hall, and
we have anticipated an initial capacity of 1,000 participants. Look for an
email invitation to all members from Roberta Stevens on Wednesday, April
27th with more information. The Connect group will go live that day as
well.

Thanks to the ALA Committee on Membership Meetings for their leadership in
developing this Virtual Town Hall. This opportunity for members to
participate virtually, discussing issues that affect all types of libraries
while helping to shape the future of the Association, anticipates a full
virtual membership meeting in the future. The Committee will bring a report
to Council at Annual Conference about the Town Hall, and invites you to
participate in the in-person Membership Meeting in New Orleans on Saturday,
June 25 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
