TechSoup for Libraries August 2012 Newsletter

[Edge Initiative]<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=3XW83O5SuCO9j3CbGEhf4g>

The Edge Initiative: Examples and Perspectives from Libraries on Training and Management

Wondering how to succeed in the Edge Initiative<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=F2_fKKfZ30XASbcrKlGcIg>'s Benchmark One<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=2Y55uoflq8jbhn_zWrV_MA>? Our guest blogger Crystal Schimpf is taking a close look at models of successful technology training programs<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=KDERTk0MBdb79yBWG04wuA> and sharing ideas for how to create similar programs in your library. Thus far she has shared best practices on offering:

  * Individual Technology Instruction<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=vHlTO3xc8QTr_KkDZGsg8Q>: maximize flexibility with one-on-one assistance, including tips from two libraries to help you decide whether it is best to take questions as they come up, or to schedule appointments with expert staff.
  * Open Lab Assistance<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=JTPR597Vkbn52Flu0GgtfQ>: provide flexibility and focus to your technology training. Find out how the rural Bemis Public Library<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=QjXKLKIQWnn5_FJ7FMb1LQ> in Colorado runs a successful open lab program, and read about Enoch Pratt Free Library<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=pdR1kSw07aMnwmy96iW21g>'s innovative Career Building Clinic.

Benchmarks 7 and 8 focus on engaging your community and building strategic relationships. Sarah's post, Edge Benchmarks: Community Assessment and Partnerships<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=8uE9LnnHsProVv8eSpbKtw>, highlights the award-winning Naperville Public Library<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=N6_9ThXyhGyV3QvNPeqVkw> that has nourished a community-oriented culture of sharing and listening, and uses partnerships to support services that might have fallen by the wayside due to funding shortages.
[Library Spotlight]

Lynn Hoffman, Library Operations Manager at the Brown County Library<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=AP3AjQHaBByQBAK3QQCXVg> in Wisconsin, shared her thoughts of the Edge Benchmarks. Read her blog post to discover when Good Enough isn't Good Enough<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=vDswyH8hzZrnP368rdTTpA>, and find out what she thinks is the biggest challenge to Edge's success.

New Benchmark Survey: engagement in community planning and digital inclusion efforts

Every month we have a survey to ask for your feedback, one benchmark at a time. Thanks to the many people who shared your thoughts in last month's survey. You are helping to make the Benchmarks an even better project, and we really appreciate it. Our winner from last month is Cecilia Barham, from the Decatur Public Library<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=DU7FMQPd2T11bXfS179aFw> in Decatur, TX. We want to know what you think about these aspirational benchmarks too! Please take a moment to answer the two questions in our survey about Benchmark Seven<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=Lx1ZUbcR2x5IxOrn808gwA>, and if you're lucky, win a prize!

E-readers for Everyone: Tips from Trainers<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=LatjikP-LA_-KyTbJeyuBQ>
Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 11 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. PDT

According to the recent Pew Research Center report, Libraries, patrons, and ebooks<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=JBbX23t95aiUUiZ6uOWXPQ>, many libraries offer at least some form of instruction on e-readers and e-books for patrons, including in-person classes, drop-in labs, printed tutorials or FAQs, and online tutorials. Keeping up with the changing landscape can feel overwhelming for instructors. How are some library instructors successfully navigating this sea of change? Join this session to hear the instructor perspective on keeping up and helping others.

The Edge Benchmarks<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=OdtY3QyuOoY-bdcJyhd7xA> for public access technology recommend offering technology instruction in the Benchmark One<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=7tGBYcUe4Cr22FOG0-Eqog>. This webinar will offer practical advice to help libraries increase the level of digital literacy in their communities

Interesting Technology Uses

[Uses for Technology]

Last month TechSoup showcased interesting uses of technology. On the TechSoup for Libraries blog<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=2uHAtNr-fV7wu5hMxTrnPQ> we highlighted some ways we've seen libraries use technology that you may have not thought of before. Let us know<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=UmqHCK4LJoHdEwJXD1ITMA> how you are using technology in interesting ways so we can share your story with other libraries.

  * PowerPoint<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=GLjNiLJZJdtJn3BH0CbP6Q>: Whether you are presenting online or face-to-face, PowerPoint adds a visual element to your training.
  * Social media<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=322jOjKtD0oaU3IN19ZjBA>: With social media you can develop an online presence in your community that creates and nurtures a truly communicative culture.
  * Digital video<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=fhz23_KYrRvKyapoisj0sQ>: Create and share videos to connect with your community, share knowledge, engage and energize your staff and patrons, and demonstrate value on a personal level.

Libraries Build Digital Communities

[IMLS]

Digital inclusion refers to access to the Internet and technology, as well as relevant content and services, including training for the digital literacy skills required for effective use. IMLS is working with TechSoup, WebJunction<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=XIaZ4ypt4gtGlQhPKsAaJw>, and the International City/County Management Association<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=-KxUs3pNU5wM1NBKjvhWNw> to develop resources to support digital inclusion efforts at the community level. The foundation for this project is the IMLS Building Digital Communities framework<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=6eVqhI9McF-5lz_3SvoC5w>.

One of the first steps outlined in the Framework is to convene stakeholders to help develop a shared community understanding of digital inclusion. Sarah shares how to extend your network<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=ZExymrQ1-_aprLEWgt57mA> by using the three personality types in Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point<http://tsg.convio.net/site/R?i=aGrYg_7h1nE8Aw4N3X1pjQ>." Check out her post and also access the Building Digital Communities Worksheet, shared during the ALA conference.
