State Library Board to Meet in Salem

The State Library Board will meet at the Oregon State Library in Salem on Thursday, December 19th for their strategic planning session, and on Friday, December 20th for their regularly scheduled meeting. The Board will have a discussion with their Library Services and Technology Act Advisory Council and hear from OLA's Public Library Division concerning public library standards on the 19th, during the planning session. At their regular meeting on the 20th, the Board will hear appeals of staff decisions on Ready to Read Grant Awards and review the LSTA Advisory Council statewide database license recommendation. An open forum will be held at 10:30 a.m. Anyone may address the Board at the open forum on any topic.

Final Lecture of the Oregon State Library 2013 Fall Lecture Series

[Sullivan]The Oregon State Library is pleased to announce the final lecture in our 2013 Fall Lecture Series. From 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, at the Employment Department Auditorium, noted Oregon naturalist Bill Sullivan will present from his recent novel, D.B. Cooper & the Exploding Whale: Folk Heroes of the Northwest. The auditorium is located on the first floor of the Employment Building at 875 Union St. in Salem. Sullivan is a frequent presenter at our State Library lecture series and we welcome him back. He brings in a big crowd so please note the move to the Employment building. Join us for an entertaining and provocative examination of Oregon Folk heroes and mysteries from D.B. Cooper, the Exploding Whale, and Sasquatch. Bill Sullivan explores and examines Oregon Folk hero mysteries and legends, tying them into Governor Oswald West's polices and the ongoing mystery revolving around the outcome of the D.B. Cooper case. Native Oregonian Bill Sullivan is an author of over 17 books and numerous articles about Oregon. He began hiking at age 5 and has continued to explore and write about Oregon's natural history throughout his life. He is well known for his many books describing Oregon's hiking trails and natural beauty. After studying at Deep Springs College in the California desert, receiving an English degree from Cornell University, and studying linguistics at Germany's Heidelberg University, he earned an M.A. in German literature from the University of Oregon. Please join us on December 4th at the Employment Building as our Fall Lecture Series concludes.

Report on Oregon Digital Collections Plan Now Available Online

[Plumer]Over the summer, Danielle Plumer (a digital collections consultant) completed an environmental scan of digital collection projects in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest region and reported the results. Based on these results, Ms. Plumer also created a plan that includes working models for cross-institutional collaborative digital collection projects for the state of Oregon. The plan's flexible models are based on current digitization and digital content management standards and encourage coordination and/or aggregation of freely available digitized cultural collections throughout the state. The Oregon Digital Collections Plan was presented to the LSTA Council last October and State Library Board will be determining next steps later this month based on the plan's recommendations. The plan is now available for download<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/projects/digicollections/index.aspx> (singly or in parts) from the State Library website. The research and development of this plan was paid for with LSTA funds.

Ready to Read Grants Coming this Month

The 2013-2014 Ready to Read Grants will be mailed to public library directors by the end of December. Included in this mailing will be a list of the libraries receiving grants this year, descriptions of the projects they plan to implement with their Ready to Read Grant in 2014, and a sample press release. Legislators increased Ready to Read funding for the 2013-2015 biennium, so please be sure to thank them and inform them how the grant is benefiting children and young adults locally at your library. The Oregon Library Association's Legislative Committee maintains a webpage<http://www.olaweb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=304> on the Ready to Read Grant program with a variety of resources to help you communicate with Legislators and other library stakeholders in your community.

Letters About Literature Submission Deadlines are December 10th and January 10th

[LAL Logo]Letters About Literature is a national reading and writing contest sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Students write letters to an author explaining how that author's book changed their way of thinking about the world or themselves. There are three competition levels: Level I for 4th-6th graders, Level II for 7th-8th graders, and Level III for 9th-12th graders. Oregon's three winners - one from each competition level - will go on to compete nationally. All Level III entries must be postmarked by December 10, 2013 and Level I and Level II entries by January 10, 2014. Questions? Creative Aging in America's Libraries Project includes Three Oregon Libraries

The Creative Aging in America's Libraries has been funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This three-year national leadership project will improve, expand, and sustain creative aging programs in public libraries and will help position libraries as community cornerstones for positive aging. The project will establish the Lifetime Arts Library Affiliate Network through which up to 150 librarians, representing twenty-two library systems in twelve states, will participate in training, receive on-going technical assistance, participate in a national peer network, and receive support to implement programs in their communities. In Oregon, three libraries will be participating in the Affiliate Network: Cedar Mill Community Library, North Plains Public Library, and Beaverton City Library (as Consortium Lead). Oregon Intellectual Freedom News Database: Historical Articles Upload Complete

All relevant historical articles from the State Libraries files have been abstracted and added to the Oregon Intellectual Freedom News Database<http://commons.pacificu.edu/iforegon/> thanks to Genna James, a volunteer who recently received a Masters in Library Science. The database includes 711 newspaper articles from 1946 - 2013, with current articles being added annually. Most articles are about challenges to library materials and other censorship-related issues. While not comprehensive, this repository covers a wide range of challenges which have occurred in Oregon over the past 50+ years. Search results provide an abstract of the article, keywords, newspaper, date, location, participants, and outcome. Full text articles can be requested by contacting the coordinator of the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse<http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/Pages/intellectual.aspx>, currently Katie Anderson<mailto:katie.anderson at state.or.us>. The Oregon Intellectual Freedom News Database is made available through a partnership of the Oregon State Library, the OLA Intellectual Freedom Committee, and Pacific University.
