Hi Dan,

This isn't a direct answer to your questions, but it may be of interest:

* Alliance for audited media<http://www.auditedmedia.com/> provides some ranked lists of most-popular magazines.
o "Top 25" lists ranked by different methods are available on their Research and Data<http://www.auditedmedia.com/news/research-and-data.aspx> page.
o Longer lists can be obtained through their search interface<http://abcas3.auditedmedia.com/ecirc/magform.asp>. I leave the Title field blank and and select Total Paid and Analyzed Non-Paid Circulation - Descending in the Sort By drop-down menu.
* Library Journal creates an annual "Best Magazines" list (e.g., Best Magazines of 2012<http://reviews.libraryjournal.com/2013/05/best-of/magazine-vital-signs-best-magazines-of-2012/>).

Best,

Subject: [Libs-Or] magazine collection development (public libraries)

i posted this inquiry four years ago. apologies to those with long memories or those who use the archive.

then again, much can change in a few years.

we are sprucing-up our periodical collection for the holidays. Of our forty-some subscriptions, we carry most of the core, boilerplate, titles: time, good housekeeping, sunset, architectural digest, people, etc.

we also have some regional-specific items: surfer, oregon coast, cowboys & indians.

My questions are twofold:

"if you could add just one new title to your adult periodical collection, what would it be?

"among your current titles, which do you consider having the most overall value?"

circulation doesnt necessary equate with value as many of our periodicals are used in-house.

suggestions....anyone?

thanks in advance,

dan cawley
