The Wayne State University School of Library and Information Science are pleased to announce the availability of two WSU Library Graduate Student Assistantships starting in Fall 2013. The GSA positions have been specially redesigned to provide a wide overview of academic library operations, with a focus on developmental skills in operational areas increasing in responsibility and independence over a two year period. Each assistantship provides a full tuition scholarship (up to 36 credits) for a master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS), an annual $15,000 stipend, and health insurance. The GSA positions are open to both new and current students.

First year GSAs will provide direct user assistance at information/reference desks by answering in-person and phone queries; assist patrons with the libraries online catalog, internet, and electronic databases; assist with the development of library guides, bibliographies; provide bibliographic instruction and complete special projects as assigned. Second year GSAs will provide five hours of reference service, with the remaining fifteen hours working in library operations teams on special projects. Team assignment is based on interest, and can include work with instruction, discovery services, material processing, eResources, acquisitions, and digital publishing.

Additionally, with the continuing support of WSU's Graduate School, SLIS will again offer New Student Scholarships for Fall 2013. SLIS New Student Scholarships are competitive, merit-based awards targeted for new MLIS students who intend to enroll in the School for the Fall 2013 semester. The School’s goal is to recruit high achieving, motivated students who will contribute to the SLIS learning community both on-campus and online. The awards will cover two LIS courses.
