NCES releases Statistics in Brief comparing student loan borrowing and debt of 1994, 2001, and 2009 college graduates

[b-b logo]Degrees of Debt: Student Loan Repayment of Bachelor's Degree Recipients 1 Year After Graduating: 1994, 2001, and 2009 examines the rate of borrowing and the cumulative student loan debt of bachelor's degree recipients 1 year after they attained their degrees. It compares three cohorts spanning a 15-year period: 1994, 2001, and 2009. The most recent cohort graduated during the 2008 recession. Key findings include the following:

* The percentage of bachelor's degree recipients who borrowed to pay for their undergraduate education increased from 49 percent in 1994, to 64 percent in 2001, and to 66 percent in 2009.

* Borrowers' cumulative debt (in 2009 dollars) also increased, going from $15,000 in 1994, to $22,400 in 2001, and to $24,700 in 2009.

* Proportionately fewer borrowers in the latest cohort (who graduated during the 2008 recession) were in repayment 1 year after they attained their degrees (60 percent in 2009) than were graduates in the earlier two cohorts (65 and 66 percent, respectively in 1994 and 2001).

* A larger percentage of borrowers in the latest cohort (31 percent) also faced high monthly loan payments (exceeding 12 percent of their monthly income in 2009), compared with 22 and 18 percent of their counterparts in 1994 and 2001.

This Statistics in Brief is a product of the National Center for Education Statistics at the Institute of Education Sciences, part of the U.S. Department of Education.
