[Libs-Or] How to circulate book with loose inserts? (S. by JJ Abrams)

We really struggled with this one in particular, since it also has a
whimsical cover design that includes fake library stamps and a fake call
number sticker! I think it was designed as a bad joke on libraries.

Our imperfect solution was ultimately to fabricate a dustjacket out of
the slipcover, and paste an envelope containing all of the inserts into
the back of the book. I'm sure it loses some exploratory elements, but
other than taking all of the inserts entirely we couldn't think of a
better way of doing it. We don't check the individual inserts when it's
returned; we just let them fly.

I see there are several intrepid libraries are circulating the
Abrams/Dorst concept book “S.”(which is issued with 22 loose inserts).

We at BCLD are unsure quite how to handle it. I’m hoping my wise &
kind library friends can help.
· Are there special techniques used to process &
circulate such an item?
· Does circulating in the slipcover help?
· Is there a system of tracking the inserts or does one
just let the item fly with the expectation that if it comes back
complete, “it was meant to be, if not….”

Thanks in advance for any good counsel.

As the great Garrison Keillor says, “Be well, do good work, and keep in
touch.”
