State Library Board to Meet in Lincoln City

The Oregon State Library Board will meet on August 15, 2014 at the Driftwood Public Library in Lincoln City. The Board will be using the transformation work done over the last two years as the basis for developing a strategic plan for the Oregon State Library. The focus of the facilitated August 15th meeting will be to refine the mission and high level goals of the State Library.

Names of OSL Divisions Changed

The four divisions of the Oregon State Library have recently changed names to align more closely with the work of each division. They are as follows: Government Information and Library Services (formerly Government Research Services), Library Support and Development Services (formerly Library Development), Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library (formerly Talking Book and Braille Services), and Library Operations (formerly Library Administrative Services).

Oregon State Library Participates in Celebrating the Oregon Historical Quarterly's 115th

[OHQ]When we noticed that the Oregon Historical Society had invited individuals and organizations to join in the celebration of the 115th year of the Oregon Historical Quarterly by sharing photos of their collections or favorite issues on Facebook or Twitter (#OHQ115<https://twitter.com/search?f=realtime&q=%23OHQ115&src=typd>), we decided to take part in the fun. We snapped a photo of State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen next to the bound volumes of the Oregon Historical Quarterly in the Reference Room, and some of the library staff who were available late on a Friday afternoon came together to take a picture in front of that collection (top row, L to R: Ferol Weyand, Jey Wann, Katie Anderson, Jessica Rondema, Robin Speer; bottom row, L to R: Arlene Weible, Deanne Smith, Heather Pitts, MaryKay Dahlgreen). We also got a couple shots of the circulating copies in the Periodicals area. Congratulations, Oregon Historical Quarterly! Here's to many more years collecting and preserving Oregon history.

Oregon Index Cards Scanning Project has Begun

[Scan2][Scan1]The State Library has partnered with another state agency to scan the historic Oregon Index cards. During the down-time cycles in their regular work load, Oregon Department of Revenue staff are using their high speed/high volume check scanner to scan the cards. This project has provided Revenue staff the opportunity to learn more about the features of the scanner, improve their scanning skills, and tighten workflow processes. State Library staff members are thrilled to have forged such a beneficial partnership with Revenue staff. It is expected that the contents of the 460 drawers will be scanned by the end of the summer. Each card image is saved in both TIF and JPG formats. The scanner prints a file name, containing drawer number and the sequential card number, on the back of each card.

The Oregon Index spans the late 1900s to the mid 1980s, and contains citations to articles published in Portland and Salem newspapers, journals, book chapters, etc. Topics cover events and issues important to the history of Oregon and state government. After scanning, Phase 2 of the project will involve making this content available to all Oregonians.
