Candice, I think your idea of a Social Responsibilities roundtable is a good idea. 

However, not all of us get to attend OLA, but anyone who wants can read the posts on Lib-Or and even add their comments if so inclined. And I liked the serendipity and the spontaneity of this recent interaction. It was raw and unleashed and then we all took a breathe and stepped back and pondered...

I think in regards to the diversity discussion – a possible action step is to reinvigorate the SRRT (Social Responsibilities) roundtable. Here’s the brief description of the roundtable found on OLA’s webpages, http://www.olaweb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=308 . 

Being socially responsible implies that we have an ethical obligation to act in the best interest of those in our society. The SRRT provides a place for discussion and learning about how we can serve our communities in a socially responsible way. Respect for diversity, equitable service, and understanding needs-in-context through community involvement are core values of this round table. 

Any OLA member can join this roundtable simply by checking the SRRT box when you join OLA or renew. You can also add it at any time throughout the year. We will also need a chair for this roundtable. So…if you are interested in chairing please let me know asap so you can be included in summer discussions as we shape the OLA vision for the upcoming year. 

One of the benefits of participating in a roundtable is that you can sponsor presentations at the annual OLA conference. This means, then, that you could ensure that our recent, worthwhile discussion is not just continued but made a visible and constant aspect of our Oregon library community and professional organization.

I’d like to throw my support behind Steve’s and Ms. Adams’ idea. 

Personally, I’d like to have a discussion about professional ethics but I’m sure all of you have some issues that you’d like to address. 

But, especially in regard to the original topic, I know that it can be very frustrating to have discussions that don’t end in some sense of action to be achieved. How do you think we could structure this and any other discussion so that some action could be considered by the Oregon library community?

I enjoy the conversations on ideas, especially around the tough topics. Perhaps we should institute a monthly discussion on a difficult topic, just for the learning experience of it?
