Great action on the Workforce Investment Act, finally!
Posted on May 23, 2014 by Emily Sheketoff

The House and Senate have drafted a bill on workforce
investment<http://www.ala.org/advocacy/workforce-investment-act-wia>,
which acknowledges the work libraries do to help the public gain important
employment skills and find jobs?and the legislation allows libraries to be
paid for these efforts.

Over many years, our congressional library champions have
worked<http://www.districtdispatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/may2014_ala_wia_letter.pdf>(pdf)
with ALA members to include language that would include libraries in
the funding for employment help in any workforce legislation. Senator Jack
Reed (D-RI) and Representative Rush Holt (D-NJ) introduced the Workforce
Investment in Local Libraries
amendment<http://www.districtdispatch.org/tag/will-act/>to re-enforce
the idea that libraries were helping the public find work and
their efforts needed to be part of any Workforce bill moving forward.
Thanks to their continuous work, libraries are part of this
bill<http://www.districtdispatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/workforce_innovation_opportunity_act_summary.pdf>(pdf).

We hope the Senate will take up this House-Senate WIA Agreement for a vote
in mid-to-late June, then it would move to the House. Sign
up<http://ala.org/takeaction>for our Legislative Action Center for
advocacy opportunities to help push
this legislation forward.

PORTLAND, Ore. ? May 27, 2014 ? On Wednesday, United States Senator Ron
Wyden will be presented with the Oregon Library Association?s 2014
Intellectual Freedom Champion of the Year Award. Following that, Senator
Wyden will host a roundtable discussion on the subject of net neutrality
with members of the local technology start-up community and public library
leaders. Members of the media are invited to attend.

Proceedings will begin at 2 pm in the US Bank Room at Central Library, 801
SW 10th Ave. with the presentation of the award. The award is granted by the
Intellectual Freedom Committee of the Oregon Library Association to
recognize ?the contribution made by an individual or institution that has
actively promoted or defended intellectual freedom in Oregon.? The Oregon
Library Association selected Senator Wyden in recognition of his ?forceful
and sustained campaign to protect the privacy rights of Americans and others
around the world in relationship to government surveillance.?

Following the award, Senator Wyden will host a roundtable discussion on the
subject of net neutrality, the idea that all Internet traffic travels at the
same speed. Senator Wyden?s position is that Big Cable companies want to end
net neutrality by dividing the Internet into fast and slow lanes, harming
individuals and businesses alike. Joining Senator Wyden for the discussion
will be Multnomah County Library Director Vailey Oehlke (on behalf of the
Public Library Association); Michael Sherrod, Director, TCU/Coleman
Entrepreneurship Fellows Program at Texas Christian University and member of
the Executive Board of the Urban Libraries Council; Puppet Labs CEO/Founder
Luke Kanies; and Antony Falco, Founder at Orchestrate.io.

?As the son of a librarian, I know that libraries play a vital role in
promoting a thriving marketplace of free speech and free thought,? said
Senator Wyden. ?The Oregon Library Association has an especially
distinguished record of championing privacy and intellectual freedom, which
is why this award really is a special honor. I am proud to stand with the
Oregon Library Association to continue fighting against overreaching
government surveillance, plans to end to a competitive, open Internet, and
other threats to our freedom.?

Nominations close on Friday, June 13. I hope to hear from many of you before
then!
Pam
Greetings!
The Public Library Division of OLA represents all public libraries in
Oregon. The purpose of the PLD is to promote public library service and
development, to promote the potential for increasing cooperation among
public libraries, to represent the interests and concerns of public
libraries in relation to the Oregon Library Association and the Oregon State
Library and to develop legislative priorities for public libraries and other
issues as may be pertinent to the Division.
We are currently seeking candidates for the PLD Executive Board for the
2014-2015 year. New positions will begin in September 2014 and are open to
members of OLA who support the purposes of the Division. We are seeking
nominees for two Director-at-Large positions (2 year terms), Secretary (1
year term) and Vice Chair/Chair Elect (3 year term). For more information
about the responsibilities of these positions, please visit
http://www.olaweb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=227.
Joining the PLD Executive Board is a great way to meet new people and
network with public library staff from around the state. Current Board
members come from the Oregon coast, central Oregon, the Willamette Valley
and the Portland Metro area.
Please contact me (pamn at wccls.org<mailto:pamn at wccls.org>) by June 13,
specifying the Board position you are interested in. Remember, you must be a
member of OLA and the Public Library Division to be considered. Elections
will be held in July.
Looking forward to hearing from many of you!
Pam
