It's time for another round of Dear Stranger, our letter-writing project in which Oregonians exchange writing with someone they've never met.

When you write to Dear Stranger, your letter will be swapped with that of another writer. They will get your letter; you will get theirs. What happens next is up to you.

The theme for the summer 2015 round of Dear Stranger is "Safe." Letters must be mailed by September 18, 2015, to be exchanged.

In 2013, reporter Putsata Reang and photographer Kim Nguyen traveled through Southeast Asia to document repression of freedom of expression and find ways to support journalists in their efforts to expand free speech. The trip was also a homecoming of sorts--both women fled conflicts in the region as children.

This video traces the intertwined stories of Reang and Nguyen from their beginnings, when they left their native countries as young refugees. They met as journalism students in Oregon, and later returned to their home countries to work toward spreading freedom of expression.

This latest episode of the Oregon Humanities magazine podcast features writer Jamie Passaro, whose essay "Resume Usual Activity<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001zPDB7IuUbnkagPzSCXwNHU-jjOV25xAzsGr3b_7n65Z3Z44MpYhVhGrXhmPBkntIz62l7PjTzsrupUTOHhsW3LkxnsHz5an0n2t56j5DLI8o7g9dARpNu0Z4fWT6Fkw9_kzAwKMvtURLrITAUwsXzGeHwOKPhIXHSzdv6aLZnZAm6raV0CiQujumnGaZc-u7h9c2uWUgL4H5Nk2aZluTHahswbY7XM3GNkuLxalzvYtlhTSTxSO58DIbC6uAaOng&c=7HA7Evoks7WjwhlFemA_D8XNADqJRrE6DBr9LjC2YnE8o17J9UB2Uw==&ch=s4VYmKmQYjZ8o2FYlM2-MVrdX3MGqnl4zmMeX-5eq02aOHwkLWE-5Q==>" appeared in the Fix issue.

In the essay, Passaro writes about her experience growing up with a mother who struggled with severe depression and her own experience of parenting through bipolar episodes.

She joined Kathleen Holt, editor of Oregon Humanities, for a conversation about what it was like to write the piece and the reactions she has seen to her writing. Tim LaBarge

Two weeks ago, just before our recent Think & Drink with Eula Biss, I should have been mingling with guests at the Alberta Rose Theatre. Instead, I found myself standing back and watching as several Oregon Humanities board members moved through the theater talking with guests and friends. It was encouraging and motivating to see board members greet audience members and one another, engage in conversation, and demonstrate by their presence and comportment how they feel about the work Oregon Humanities is doing.

Since the beginning of my acquaintance with Oregon Humanities' board, I have been struck by how engaged, open, and friendly they are, as a group and as individuals. Meetings of the whole board and of smaller work groups and committees usually feel alive and productive rather than rote or compulsory. Much of this is due to the particular combination of people on the board and to the care they have for what OH is trying to do: to get people all over the state thinking and talking across differences about questions we share. The biggest shared question we regularly explore and act on might be "how we can live better together?" OH board members seem committed in an ongoing way to thinking through the key parts of that question: the "we," the "better," and the "together."

Thinking about where our board members come from and what they most care about, I'm reminded how important it is to our work that OH board members reflect a wide range of perspectives and areas of expertise: geography, race, age, language, educational background, profession. If, as an organization, we hope to invite diverse perspectives, our board and staff must, in a perpetually self-refreshing way, do the same

So even though OH has a remarkable board of directors, I'm also aware that there are many people around the state who could further strengthen OH's board. We have a process for inviting and bringing in new members<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001zPDB7IuUbnkagPzSCXwNHU-jjOV25xAzsGr3b_7n65Z3Z44MpYhVhOpHE2Zb0UXP_bksvHIDHJv4QjLqbU4bvUVR1207Ownii4kywoWsEpLBeiJ11EYY5E8TK4xVw3USxZ0RF9cEPNJIt3w7wFf26VwCPPrKZm6K9c5Cqo5_dQrzUCbhob7xrdzH1Dagcl3luGDxJEWSkcnabR7tDWhK-JYhEDLAJi9A&c=7HA7Evoks7WjwhlFemA_D8XNADqJRrE6DBr9LjC2YnE8o17J9UB2Uw==&ch=s4VYmKmQYjZ8o2FYlM2-MVrdX3MGqnl4zmMeX-5eq02aOHwkLWE-5Q==>, so please let us know if there are people who might help Oregon Humanities do its work better--people who would support our vision of an Oregon that invites diverse perspectives, explores challenging questions, and strives for just communities.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and your help.
