[Libs-Or] Books on tape

We only got rid of our cassettes when we needed the shelving for expanding the non-fiction area and the checkouts were down to 10 or so month. We then sold them through the Friends for $.25 each and encouraged people to buy a lot.

We still have our VHS tapes as they are on a wall to the side and it’s really a tough space to use and we still have people borrowing the tapes. We’ll eventually dump them, but at this time they are still a few hundred circulations a month.

Some people still drive older cars that only have cassette players in them... We retain a small collection of books on cassette for those patrons. Since we live in a rural area and the distance between towns is somewhat lengthy, we understand that philosophy. As the tapes break or don't circ anymore, we weed them.

Here’s my query du jour – is anyone still keeping books on cassette tape for those elderly ladies who still love their cassette players? We’re ready to jettison our collection, but have a tiny little qualm about it. I know – it’s that “we can’t get rid of them – someone, somewhere might need them someday” syndrome.

Advice, reassurance, or a boot-to-the-behind needed. Thanks!
