Celebrate Beverly Cleary's 100th Birthday on April 12th
[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOApr2016/BeverlyClearysmall.jpg]Beloved children's book author Beverly Cleary was born on April 12th, 1916, in McMinnville and raised in Portland. As a librarian, Cleary learned that elementary school children were looking for and struggling to find books about kids like themselves. In 1950, Cleary published her first book, Henry Huggins, which is about a boy, his dog, and his friends who live in the Hollywood neighborhood in Portland.
Resources and activity ideas for planning celebrations are available on OPB's Discovering Beverly Cleary<http://www.opb.org/artsandlife/series/beverlycleary/> webpage and the OLA Children's Services Division 100 Years of Beverly Cleary<http://www.csdola.org/100-years-of-beverly-cleary.html>. Public libraries will receive a packet in the mail from the State Library that includes a DVD of OPB's Oregon Art Beat "Discovering Beverly Cleary" documentary, bookmarks, and balloons. School and academic libraries can view the documentary streaming from OPB's website<http://www.opb.org/television/programs/artbeat/episodes/> or check out the DVD from their public library (after it is added to their collection). These resources are provided by the Oregon State Library, OPB, and OLA's Children's Services Division.

The State Library is grateful to the Oregon Department of Transportation Library and History Center, who made many of the materials in their collections available for this website.
State of Oregon Research Academy
[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOApr2016/SORA.jpg]Effective government operation requires a great deal of research. In order to conduct that research, the state employs a fairly large number of researchers. The results of their research are often manifested in the delivery of services, development of policy, implementation of legislation and eventually, published in state documents that are eventually housed at the Oregon State Library.
Researchers do not, however, need to operate in within the confines of a single agency nor utilize the same methodology, research design, and analysis. Research is most effective when it is a collaborative process where colleagues can come together to discuss and share ideas, approaches, and results.
The State of Oregon Research Academy (SORA) was created to offer those working for the State of Oregon an opportunity to network, build connections for collaboration, and learn more about research, data, and statistics. Membership is free and currently stands at nearly 200 members, representing approximately 20 agencies. Staff from the State Library also participates in SORA, serving on the group's executive committee as Volunteer Coordinator and assisting in the planning of programming.
SORA has hosted events including panel discussions, research presentations, mixers, and recently at the State Library, a poster session. Events are free and open to the public. So, please attend if you'd like to get a little more insight into what your state government is doing.
If you work with patrons who are interested in pursuing careers involving research, SORA may provide them with a great networking opportunities. For instance, SORA is in the process of organizing a job shadow program and intern positions could result from networking with group members. The State of Oregon is always looking for quality research staff.
More information about SORA, including an events calendar, can be found on their website<http://oregonresearch.org/>.
