Congratulations to Suad Mohamed, recipient of the first OLA Leadership
Development Scholarship

Suad Mohamed, a Somali Bilingual Library Assistant at Multnomah County
Library, has been awarded $1000 from the Oregon Library Association to
pursue a Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate. She recently
took a Basic Project Management class through Multnomah County which
sparked her interest in pursuing PMP certification. The scholarship will
provide support for her to pursue the educational requirements of the
certification through Project Management Institute (PMI) online education
as well as the Women in Education Leadership program offered at Harvard
University.

Suad's position is the only one functioning to serve an underserved
population of 10,000 Somali immigrants and refugees in Multnomah County.
The certification will help her develop her management skills to perform to
her fullest potential and benefit her library system and the greater
community in general. She believes an essential step in being more
intentionally inclusive and equitable is to increase the number of staff
who work with specific populations, and partner with community
organizations that provide services to these populations. Suad plans to
use platforms like the OLA conference to continue to share her expertise
and experiences, just as library colleagues share their expertise with her
and others at the conference. She is presenting on Equity and Inclusion
with colleagues at the 2017 OLA Conference and her part will focus on
inclusion as it relates to immigrant populations.

Applications for the OLA Leadership Development Scholarship
<http://www.olaweb.org/scholarships-ola>are reviewed three times a year to
support OLA members in developing their leadership abilities. The next
application deadline is March 31, 2017.
