Good morning, John—

I’m writing to share the news that the Auraria Library Director search is underway and I’m hoping that you’ll share this opportunity with other library leaders like yourself.

Auraria Library is the only tri-institutional academic library in the country, serving three institutions of higher education: the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University Denver, and the Community College of Denver. The library provides robust print and digital collections, technology resources, study spaces, research help, and information literacy instruction to over 42,000 students and 5,000 faculty and staff on an urban campus in downtown Denver. This is truly a unique library that needs an energetic and dynamic leader.

The Director position has been open for some time. As you may know, Cynthia (Cindy) Hashert has served as interim director of the Library since January 2016, following Mary Somerville’s transition to the University of the Pacific. I’m happy to answer any questions about this position and the library generally, although I’ve only been here since July, so I may need to forward inquiries to the appropriate person! Any interested applicants can learn more about the library by visiting our website, http://library.auraria.edu, or by contacting our staff.

For your convenience, I’ve pasted the entire job description below. Applications can be submitted at www.cu.edu/cu-careers. Thank you for sharing this posting widely among your peers and colleagues!

All the best,

Job Description

Auraria Library Director - 07287

University Staff

Description

*Applications are accepted electronically ONLY at www.cu.edu/cu-careers .*

University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus

Auraria Library

Auraria Library Director

Position #350020 / Requisition 07287

 The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) seeks an innovative, visionary, inspired leader to serve as the University Librarian and Director (Director) of the Auraria Library. The Auraria Library serves three distinct higher education institutions – CU Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver – on one urban campus located in downtown Denver. The position reports to the CU Denver Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Resources and Services in the Office of the Provost.

The Library’s 2030 scenario presents bold aspirations for supporting the three institutions’ teaching, learning, research, and service missions where the library is “convener, communicator, creator, collaborator, and connector of innovative spaces for communities beyond the home campus – expanding conservation roles into generative and creative roles.” A comprehensive $32 million facility renovation, scheduled for early 2017 completion, brought interdisciplinary teams together to re-envision organizational outcomes, re-invent service models, and re-purpose facility spaces. With these new initiatives, Auraria Library is cultivating 21st century synergies among educational technology, innovative learning spaces, digital media, digital scholarship, researcher support, research instruction, and public services.

The Director works closely with faculty, students, and administration from all three institutions in planning, resourcing, implementing, and evaluating library resources, programs, and services. The Director empowers and enables all Library personnel in the decision-making processes through shared leadership principles and practices. The Director inspires and activates an energetic cohort of Library leaders to ensure strategic and tactical alignment of Auraria Library resources with tri-institutional missions.

The successful candidate will embrace these essential duties:

·        Implement, evaluate and refine high-impact library services in newly-renovated spaces under the direction of an innovative leadership team;

·        Continuously seek avenues to optimize customer service through the application of innovative technologies, policies, and services;

·        Employ shared leadership principles to support decision making;

·        Support all Library personnel in achieving a welcoming, affirming learning environment;

·        Articulate a positive image of the Library across campus and to community constituents;

·        Enrich synergistic relationships with executive campus leaders and develop learning partnerships with academic and student support services staff across the three institutions;

·        Collaborate with peers within the Library and across campus to foster student success and further the goals of the three institutions;

·        Participate in scholarship to advance public service at the Library and in the profession;

· Continuously foster library development efforts, including grant seeking and fundraising; and,

· Participate in appropriate regional and/or national professional associations.

Successful candidates will have an intimate understanding of and significant experience in addressing the major challenges facing academic libraries today, including rapid changes in the discovery and access of data, information, and knowledge; creative and effective use of physical space; and, changing roles of academic libraries as places, purveyors of information, supporters of research and teaching, enablers of learning, and creators of knowledge. On the tri-institutional Auraria campus, this requires open communication and consensus building across multiple constituencies with distinct aspirations and diverse goals. The Director joins CU Denver at a time of significant opportunity, with a newly re-invented Library organization in a renovated library facility well positioned to deliver high-impact programs and services.
