Grow Your Cultural Competence with the 2017 LLAMA Career Institute

Most of us working in the library field are aware of the importance of cultural diversity in the workplace. However, awareness and competence are different things. Cultural competence is the ability to effectively move in and out of diverse relationships and experiences with confidence. It is a separate skill set that can be learned.

Join the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) for the 7th LLAMA Career Institute -- Cultural Proficiency for Library Leaders – on Friday, June 23, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Held in conjunction with the American Library Association’s (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago, this year’s institute will feature DeEtta Jones, Principle of DeEtta Jones and Associates, a consulting practice with a broad client base that includes libraries, educational institutions, not-for-profits, government agencies, and global corporations.

This Career Institute is designed for managers committed to ensuring the library’s inclusive workplace environment and for those responsible for developing diversity-related programs and services. It will focus on helping participants enhance their knowledge, expertise, and skills in four of the 14 Foundational Competencies<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT02NDcxNDM3JnA9MSZ1PTEwMTg3ODQzMTcmbGk9NDI3MTA0NzU/index.html> identified by LLAMA – communication skills, emotional intelligence, problem solving, and conflict resolution.

Participants will learn:
-The core concepts of cultural proficiency and how to apply them in their leadership roles
-How to create a shared language
-How unconscious bias effects perception and behavior
-Practical ways to move from diversity “awareness” to “action”
-How culture influences values, personal worldviews and behaviors
-Ways to bring culturally inclusive behaviors and programs to your library, library patrons and clients

Fees:
$225 for LLAMA Divisional Members;
$275 for ALA members;
$165 for Students and Retired Members; and
$375 for Non-Members.

The LLAMA Career Institute is open to all. Registration fees cover workshop materials and refreshments. Lunch is not included.

Pre-registration prior to June 1, 2017 is recommended. On-site registration will be subject to availability and will be available at the price categories listed above.
