The Oregon Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee
<http://www.olaweb.org/if-home> currently has two open positions and is
seeking new members.

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about intellectual
freedom and excited about sharing information and support with libraries
and library staff in Oregon. We are hoping to increase the diversity of our
committee in terms of geographic area, cultural background, and type of
library (especially public and school libraries).

To apply, please send a letter of interest (no longer than 1 page) to Ross
Betzer, the current chair of the committee at ifc.chair at olaweb.org. Please
include information about: the areas of intellectual freedom that interest
you, your availability to participate in committee work, and the work and
life experience which you would bring to the committee. The deadline for
applying is Friday, July 28, 2017.

The Intellectual Freedom Committee is a 9-member standing OLA committee
with the charge of supporting the library community's commitment to the
freedom to read, open access to information, and other intellectual freedom
issues throughout the state. Ongoing projects of the committee include:

   - supporting Banned Books Week;
   - sponsoring sessions at the OLA conference on IF issues;
   - supporting libraries that receive a challenge to their materials;
   - providing information on IF issues through listserv communication,
   social media, web tool kits, and other resources;
   - providing a searchable database of news reports related to
   intellectual freedom issues in Oregon;
   - honoring Intellectual Freedom Champions;
   - working with the Legislative Committee and the OLA Board on topical
   issues that arise, such as net neutrality.

The IFC meets approximately six times a year, plus a short meeting at the
OLA annual conference. Most committee members participate remotely, either
via GoToMeeting or conference call.

What's in it for you? Among other things, you will receive: the
satisfaction of helping colleagues around the state, an opportunity to meet
and work with smart librarians outside of your own library, and the chance
to contribute to the preservation of intellectual freedom.

If you have any questions about the committee, please feel free to contact
me with them!

-Ross
