Tech-Talk: MOBILE - Block Annoying and Unwanted Calls

[annoying calls]

Are you starting to receive more and more unwanted calls on your mobile phone?

It used to be that incoming rings were limited to the people to whom you gave your number. However, cell phone lines are being circulated now as much as land lines… leading to annoying calls from telemarketers and scammers.

These not only interrupt what you’re doing, but can be especially irritating when you're working.

Good news! You can take control and block incoming calls from specific numbers (and whole area codes) easily on your mobile phone. The steps vary based on what type of device you have. Let's take a look.

iOS (Apple iPhone)

[block call on iPhone]

If you have an iPhone, the easiest way to block a number is right from your call list.

  1. In your Phone app, go to Recents.
  2. Find the number you want to block.
  3. Click the little “i” icon on the right.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap Block this Caller.
  5. Then confirm by clicking Block Contact.

If there's someone in your Contacts list that you want to block, go to your Contacts list, tap on the name of the person, and continue with steps #3 and #4 above.

Now, when someone you have blocked tries to call, it goes directly to voicemail and lands in a “blocked messages” folder in your voice mail inbox (if they leave a message). However, you won’t get a notification that they called.

TIP: When you block a phone number it will automatically carry over and block texts and FaceTime calls as well.

For Most Newer Android Devices

These instructions may vary from phone to phone as they can be device specific.

[block call]

Stock Android

If the call just came in:

  * Go to your dial pad and click on Logs or Recent.
  * Find the number and then click on the 3 dots in the upper right of the screen.
  * Select Add to reject list.

Or, you can block a number that is already in your contact list.

  * Select the person from your contacts.
  * Hit the little icon in the upper right corner that looks like a pencil.
  * Tap the 3-dot menu icon and check the box next to All Calls to Voicemail. All calls from that person will go right to voicemail.

[block call]

Most Samsung Phones

To block calls from a recent incoming call:

  * Open to the Phone app and go to the Log.
  * Select a number and then choose More and then Block settings.
  * There you will be able to select Add to Auto-Reject List, or it may say Call Block and Message Block.

If the number is in your contacts, open the Phone app, select More, then go to Settings and Call Blocking. Add the number you want to block.

[block calls]

 Most LG Phones

  *   Open the Phone app.
  * Tap the 3-dot menu in the top right corner, and select Call Settings
  * Go to Call reject then Reject calls.
  * Select the Plus sign icon, and then add the number you’d like to block from the call log or your contacts.

NOTE: You can also find it by going to Settings, then Wireless and networks, select Call, then Call reject and Reject calls from.

Do Not Call Registry

Additionally, reduce the number of unwanted calls by adding your land line and/or cell phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry, https://www.donotcall.gov/<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001fKy9a-0PjdZ2TIe3HtzrdD3p7YHj653heqdNJiYcy2ZyIHTe4a3uwXWlJ3TReAYSyIu9YZ3_kMnJU7dasS2z1nPEJu-ybMUdCHBwev-J1ezZnHr0GaxiJAO8FMH-07OiDt4VwdOfapHsgVvC3OI-IQ==&c=SnZZOD55PWPU6EvPgrI4lSJhLSx2QzJyXYsxl2n2SXbPKgrrrqPzMQ==&ch=88eA97Y9cI-YjvSCQvLj8wW6wZ4vinFmXrO0xG56ul8dr2J4Fg4zyQ==> It's free. Communicate - Principles
Think "tech"

The way we communicate is "a-changing". The tools we use to get get people's attention and share information threaten to make "newer" techniques like email, obsolete ... at least for the newest minds in the workforce.

How we approach productivity takes on a whole new meaning. When we open our minds to others' communication needs, we need to embrace new web platforms and apps to collaborate with our younger colleagues, friends and associates more effectively.

True Story ... Picking up her 4-year-old granddaughter from preschool one day, the grandmother was amazed by the child's liveliness. She asked, "Aubrie, where do you get all of your energy?"

The sweet little girl didn’t miss a beat ... and said, "From the cloud!”
