Library Board News

State Library Board to Meet in Salem on June 9th

The State Library Board will meet at the State Library in Salem on Friday, June 9th. The board will review the recommendations of the Library Services and Technology Act Advisory Council regarding FFY2017 LSTA Grants and the 2018-2022 LSTA Five-Year Plan. The board will also review recommendations of the Talking Book and Braille Library Advisory Council regarding the Annual Donation Expenditure Plan for 2017-2018. An open forum is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Anyone may address the board on any topic at the open forum.

Digital Highlights: Celebrating Oregon's Public Beaches

[BeachBillSmall]<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOJun2017/BeachBill.jpg>Fifty years ago, on June 7, 1967, the Oregon Legislative Assembly passed House Bill 1601, commonly known as the Beach Bill. This piece of landmark legislation ensured long-term public use of all Oregon beaches by extending public ownership of land along the coast to 16 vertical feet above the low tide mark and recognizing public easements of all beach areas up to the vegetation line. In celebration of the bill's anniversary, the State Library has put together a curated digital collection<https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl:beach_bill_50th> of various photographs, publications, and ephemera documenting the history of Oregon beaches. Featured in this collection are the following:

* the 1967 and 1969 Beach Bill,
* a statement from Governor Tom McCall regarding the Supreme Court beach ruling,
* black and white photographs of scenic views and tourism,
* early travel brochures from counties along the coast,
* publications highlighting the unique features of Oregon beaches,
* reports on development and conservation efforts,
* and small posters and circulars noting wholesome hints for enjoying the beach.

Kate McGann and Renata Pilotto Retire

Long-time State Library employees Kate McGann and Renata Pilotto retired at the end of April.

Kate McGann was the Collection Coordinator in the Government Information and Library Services Division. Her duties included overseeing electronic resource licenses and general coordination of the Library's collections. She negotiated electronic resources contracts and coordinated a detailed analysis of the State Library's Oregon Collection. Most recently, Kate coordinated the library's compilation of information about state agency's subscriptions. Kate is an enthusiastic equestrian; something she'll have more time for in retirement.

Renata Pilotto was the State Library's accountant. Renata's attention to detail earned the library a Gold Star Award, recognizing accuracy and timeliness, year after year. She also oversaw tasks such as supply orders and equipment inventories. Renata's attention to detail also showed up in hobbies, including beautiful and delicious truffles, and intricate three-dimensional greeting cards. She looked forward to having time to relax during retirement.

The State Library thanks both Kate and Renata for their many years of service and wish them well in their retirements.

New Members Selected for the Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee

During their May 2017 meeting, the LSTA Advisory Council selected the following new members for the Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/technology/sdlp/index.aspx> (SDLAC). Their terms will run from July 1, 2017-June 30, 2020.

Position #1, Public Library Serving less than 25,000
Brenda Herren-Kenaga, St. Helens Public Library

Position #2, Academic Library from a public academic institution
Karen Kunz, Oregon Institute of Technology

Position #3, School Library drawn from OASL Membership
Len Bryan, Hillsboro School District

The State Library would like to thank outgoing members of the SDLAC for their service: Kirsten Brodbeck-Kenney, Garnetta Wilker, and Emily Miller-Francisco who served as Chair for 2016-2017. Their terms will end June 30, 2017. Lynda Irons from Pacific University will service as SDLAC Chair for the upcoming year.

New Members Selected for the Answerland Advisory Committee
