The State Library's New Logo Unveiled at OLA
[EGandMKD]<https://www-auth.oregon.egov.com/osl/LTLO/LTLOMay2017/EdGallagher_MaryKayDahlgreen.jpg>The State Library had a very successful logo unveiling at the OLA Conference<https://orlib17.wordpress.com/>. We enjoyed seeing many of you at the conference and appreciated your participation in our booth activities. Pictured here is Albany Public Library Director Ed Gallagher with State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen! Check out additional photos of conference-goers at the State Library booth on Twitter<https://twitter.com/hashtag/MyORLibrary?src=hash>.
Elevator Upgrade Project Complete
[Elevator]<https://www-auth.oregon.egov.com/osl/LTLO/LTLOMay2017/Elevator.JPG>The State Library's main elevator upgrade is now complete! Our 1930s elevator has new mechanical parts and a refinished interior. There is also a bronze State of Oregon seal in the center of the elevator car. We want to thank Straight Up Elevator, Code Electric, and Cedar Mill Construction Company for all their work on this project. We also want to thank our staff and our patrons for their patience during this time.
Take Your Child to Work Day at the State Library
[TakeYourChildToWorkDay]<https://www-auth.oregon.egov.com/osl/LTLO/LTLOMay2017/TakeYourChildtoWorkDay.jpg>On April 28th, the State Library organized a fun event for state employee parents to bring their child to see the library while they were shadowing their parents for a day of work. Activities included watching a descriptive video from Talking Book and Braille and making cataract glasses to experience first-hand what it is like to have a vision impairment. There was a book checkout station where the children could check out books and stamp due dates. A photo booth was set up with different super hero props, promoting School Library Month. Exploring microfiche, OSLIS, and getting a special behind-the-scenes tour of the library building were also part of the fun! At the end, State Librarian MaryKay read the kids a story in her office while the parents learned about the resources the State Library of Oregon offers them. Great fun was had by people of all ages! Take a look at our Tumblr blog<http://statelibraryor.tumblr.com/post/160062221278/take-your-child-to-work-day-state-agency> for more photos!
Celebrating Preservation Month
May is Preservation Month and the Government Information and Library Services division of the State Library will be participating in the 9th annual Historic Preservation Month Fair on the Capitol Mall. Organized by the State Historic Preservation Office, the fair will be held (rain or shine) on Thursday, May 11th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 15 museums, archives, libraries, and other heritage organizations from the mid-Willamette Valley will showcase their preservation activities.
This is also a good time to look back on our Preservation Assistance Grant project funded by the National Endowment of the Humanities that was completed in December. A total of 7,175 items from the Oregon history and culture collection were rehoused into archival grade enclosures purchased with the grant. These had been in danger of deterioration by acidic envelopes, covers, and bindings. This project is part of the State Library's commitment to preserve Oregon's published heritage including state agency publications and other materials about the state and region.
