Digital Highlights: Celebrating Oregon's Covered Bridges
[CoveredBridge]<https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl%3A94792/datastream/OBJ/view>For the month of September, the State Library has curated a collection of photographs and documents in celebration of some of the state's most treasured features - covered bridges. The original Oregon covered bridges were built by pioneers in the mid-1850s and continued to be built well into the 1950s. At one time, there were an estimated 450 covered bridges statewide. As these beautiful and nostalgic structures began to age, with many of them collapsing entirely, the concern for their preservation rose. Spearheaded by Senator Mae Yih, the 1987 Legislative Assembly created the Oregon Covered Bridge Program to help fund maintenance and rehabilitation projects throughout the state. Due to these efforts, we can treasure the remaining 50 covered bridges still in existence today. To learn more about Oregon's covered bridges, visit our digital highlight<http://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl:covered_bridges>.
State Library Creates Guide for Graduation Outcomes
[Guide]<http://libguides.osl.state.or.us/grad_outcomes>The State Library of Oregon creates and maintains subject guides that focus on government agency work and public libraries in the state. Recently, the Oregon Department of Education identified eight critical elements for positive high school graduation outcomes for Oregon's students. Using these outcomes, we have created a guide<http://libguides.osl.state.or.us/grad_outcomes> to provide other resources to help teachers, parents, and librarians who want to support students on their path to graduation.
If there are any topics related to public libraries in Oregon that you would like to see featured in a guide, please contact Ferol Weyand<mailto:ferol.weyand at state.or.us> (503-378-2525) of Library Support and Development Services.
Pam Davenport of NLS Visits the State Library
[TalkingBooksPam]<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOSep2017/TalkingBooksPam_fullsize.jpg>On August 28th and 29th, Talking Books had the pleasure of welcoming Pam Davenport from the National Library Service in Washington, D.C. to the State Library! Pam visits every two years to see how things are going, offer suggestions for best practices, and listen to ideas from staff.
Pam has worked in a variety of library and Talking Book-related jobs over the years, from circulation to readers' advisory to director. Now she brings her wealth of experience to the federal level as a Network Consultant. Because of her experience, she can appreciate how each position contributes to making Talking Books run smoothly, and she can easily connect with each staff member because she has done what we all do.
Pam will be summarizing her observations and her recommendations in a report that will be submitted to the State Library. Her report will be a valuable and helpful tool as Talking Books continues to adapt to the ever-changing needs of its users!
2017 Annual Report on Challenges to Library Materials is Now Available!
[BannedBooks]The 2017 Annual Report<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/projects/OIFC/2017.oifc.annual.report.pdf> on challenges to materials in Oregon libraries is available on the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse (OIFC) webpage. Last year, 20 items were challenged at six public libraries in Oregon. Nineteen of the items were retained and one is complicated so you'll have to read the report to find out what happened!
The OIFC collects reports about formal challenges to library material from all types of Oregon libraries. The information is reported to OIFC by Oregon libraries on a voluntarily basis. OIFC compiles the reports from libraries into an annual report each year; all previous reports are also available online at Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse.
Please visit the OIFC webpage<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/projects/OIFC/index.aspx> to learn about how to prepare your library for potential challenges, how to talk with patrons who express concerns about material, what happens after a reconsideration report form is submitted, and how to deal with the media if a challenge goes public.

SDLAC Releases Annual Report
The Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee (SDLAC) released its annual report<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/technology/sdlp/2016SDLACAnnualReport_Final.pdf> in August. The report highlights usage statistics of the resources in the Statewide Database Licensing Program<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/technology/sdlp/index.aspx> from the previous year. The State Library's contract with Gale/Cengage Learning expires in July 2018, so the work on a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a new contract is also outlined in the report. More information about the committee's membership, activities, and the Statewide Database Licensing Program can be found on its website<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/technology/sdlp/index.aspx>.
If you have any questions, please contact Arlene Weible<mailto:arlene.weible at state.or.us> (503-378-5020).
