Government Services Updates Online Training Opportunities

The Government Information and Library Services division<http://library.state.or.us/> has been updating our online training<http://libcal.osl.state.or.us/calendar/statelibraryor> for state employees. As we serve the information and research needs of adult researchers/learners, our offerings have adjusted in many ways, from focusing on training for specific resources and databases to providing guidance for research needs and search strategies.

Here are some of the trainings we've developed so far this year:

   *    Finding Information about Businesses<https://libcal.osl.state.or.us/event/4032822>
   How to find information about business entities (Oregon and elsewhere), with a special focus on databases provided by the State Library.
   *    Introduction to Zotero<https://libcal.osl.state.or.us/event/4046524>
   Introduces Zotero: A reference tool that helps collect, organize, cite, and share research; adding items, organizing collections and tags, creating bibliographies and generating citations, and collaboration options. Includes integration with library resources and services.
   * Grey Literature Resources for Finding Government Information<https://libcal.osl.state.or.us/event/4051611>
   Provides resources and examples of how to use grey literature to do more thorough research, with a focus on government information, such as papers, reports, government documents, etc.
   *    Finding Data & Statistics<https://libcal.osl.state.or.us/event/4047600>
   Highlights databases that provide access to data and statistics, along with recommended government statistics portals. Focuses on options for searching, browsing, and using datasets.

         *      Finding Historic Maps Online<https://libcal.osl.state.or.us/event/4210344>
         Reviews online resources that provide map data for Oregon locations - in some cases as old as the Territorial period. Also covers how to find maps in State Library and other library collections.

         2018 Public Library Statistical Survey opens August 3

         Public library directors will soon receive an email and letter with information about this year's Public Library Statistical Survey. The data from this survey provides the most comprehensive statistical picture of the state of public libraries in Oregon and contributes to the national data that has been collected since 1988 by Institute of Museum and Library Services. All legally-established public libraries in Oregon are required to complete this survey. Submissions are due October 1, 2018. Instructions and Frequently Asked Questions are available<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/statsfaq>, but if you have any additional questions or need assistance with using the survey tool (which has been redesigned for 2018!), please contact Ross Fuqua at ross.fuqua at state.or.us<mailto:ross.fuqua at state.or.us> or 503-378-5027.

         Check Out the New Resources in the State wide Database Licensing Program

         In addition to the 22 databases currently available<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/technology/sdlp/index.aspx#Current_Statewide_Databases> to libraries participating in the Statewide Database Licensing Program (SDLP), two new resources have been added:

          Books & Authors is a reader's advisory tool that includes plot summaries, reading recommendations for similar titles, and searchable information on genre, characters, subjects, and time period. It is ideal for reading groups, book clubs, and students.

         LitFinder provides access to a broad span of literary works and secondary-source materials covering world literature and authors throughout history. Including more than 150,000 full-text poems and over 800,000 poetry citations, as well as short stories, speeches, and plays. The resource also includes biographies, work summaries, photographs, and a glossary. Users can browse works by thousands of subjects, themes, genres, and movements.

         Each library's SDLP contact has been provided with specific information about accessing these new resources. If you need assistance with access, contact Arlene Weible<mailto:arlene.weible at state.or.us>, Electronic Services Consultant, 503-378-5020.

         Changes to Reference eBooks in Gale Virtual Reference Library

          The State Library's new Gale/Cengage contract also brings changes to the list of eBooks made available in Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL). Please take a moment to review the list of 89 titles<https://drive.google.com/open?id=1qMbd1HCx1aLMZlV4mh2VWOcTC5BbRgGvgKmH9CTeY90> now available. Your library's Gale/Cengage sales representative<http://galesupport.com/oregon/contact.php> can provide you with detailed information about your library's direct subscriptions, and can also provide affordable pricing for libraries that may want to continue to subscribe to titles no longer on the state list.

         2019 Ready to Read Grant Applications Now Available

         2019 Ready to Read grant applications have been mailed to library directors at all eligible public libraries and are available here<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/R2R/Apply.aspx>. One hundred and thirty three Oregon libraries are eligible to apply for a total of $734,189 in state funds, which is an average of $1.07 per youth 0-14 years old. Applications must be received by August 31, 2018.

         Ready to Read Grants are the only state funds public libraries in Oregon receive. State funds are distributed annually to legally established public libraries through this non-competitive grant program. The amount of money each library may apply for is pre-determined using a formula based on the population in and square miles of each library's service area or a minimum grant of $1,000. Libraries may spend these funds on early literacy activities for children birth through age 6 and/or Oregon statewide summer reading activities for children birth through age 14.
