Dear fellow librarians,

I'm glad to announce another exciting continuing education workshop through Emporia's SLIM program: Introduction to Scholarship of Teaching and Learning by Dr. Lauren Hays.

If you are interested in any instructional aspects in your library, this workshop is for you. This is an 8-week long class and it is fully online.


NOTE: there is an option for obtaining a graduate level credit hour with this workshop. If you intend to do so, please do not register through the link above. Time: Asynchronous online - Expect 2.5 hours of work a week for this course

Exploring the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

This practical course introduces attendees to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). SoTL is
a movement in higher education to study teaching and learning in order to improve both. Typically,
SoTL scholars study their own teaching and their own students' learning. Research findings are then
shared publicly with the teaching and learning community. Understanding the higher education teaching
and learning community is beneficial for librarians as they continue to assume more teaching responsibilities.
In addition to learning from SoTL, librarians have much to contribute to the conversation. Their expertise
in information literacy, reference, and community engagement make librarians natural contributors to SoTL.

In this course, participants will:
* Explore the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in order to understand the field.
* Identify how librarians can use and participate in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
* Brainstorm potential research topics in the field of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.


Lauren Hays (PhD, Northwest Nazarene University) is the Instructional and Research Librarian at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, KS, where she teaches, leads information literacy initiatives, co-chairs the Educational Technology Committee, and sits on the Faculty Development Committee. Her interest in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is what led her to complete a PhD, and her dissertation was titled "Academic Librarians' Teacher Identity Development Through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: A Mixed Methods Study." Currently, Dr. Hays is co-editing a book on SoTL for academic librarians. Her professional interests include teaching, SoTL, information literacy, educational technology, Library and Information Science education, teacher identity and faculty development.
