Tech-Talk: Internet - Search for Your Own Email Address / Phone
Intermediate

[email under attack]

My email address is under attack. Someone is using it to send messages that appear to be from me -- a trend known as spoofing. I need to cancel this address to stop the problem. Fortunately, it isn't my main email; I have several.

However, I do use this one in some online sites and marketing materials so I need to find where on the web this address is published... so that I can update it with a new one.

How do you find all the places your email is listed because your "digital footprint" is everywhere!

Before I tell you the answer, let's consider other situations you may find yourself in that could use the trick I'm going to show you.

· You may have changed your email, phone number or physical address… and you want to update this info online.

· You could have changed jobs and want to make sure contact info is up to date.

· You may want to monitor where your current details are showing to be sure all are legitimate.

Sometimes it can be surprising just where your personal information can appear. For example, I did a search and found that one of my email addresses popped up in a few unexpected locations:

· In a PDF document loaded to a school website -- as I was a committee member and it was listed as public information in an attendance document.

· On a website that wasn't mine -- because I had developed the site for a customer (my info was not shown in the text; it was hidden in the back-end).

· On someone else's webpage -- with a testimonial I gave years ago. (I don't endorse the product any longer, so I can now ask to have it removed).

So even if you aren't changing your email (phone / address), you may want to take a quick look at WHERE the information shows up on the web.

Do a Search on the Web for Your Data

Of course the best way to find anything on the Internet is to do a search.

[Use quote marks]

· Choose your favorite search engine, like Google.

· Key in your email address (phone or address) and put it in quote marks – like "info at Tech-Talk.com.<mailto:info at Tech-Talk.com.>"

TIP: Using quote marks around your phrase will help in the search results to find your exact words. This way, the phrase will not be picked apart by search engines giving you results for only part of your phrase (like info or tech-talk).

Now That You've Found It

· It may not be obvious where your info is located. To find it on the page press Ctlr + F to open a Search/Find window. Type in the text you're looking for to see it highlighted on the page. If it's old and needs to be updated (or deleted), you can take care of it.

· If it's in a directory, you may have to have your username and password -- so you can log in and change it there. Or you may need to put in an email request to the site to request a change.

· Some web pages are just general listings that don't matter -- so no action needs to be taken on your part.

NOTE: Don't use this technique to find: 1) all the web tools where you have an account or 2) any subscription lists you're on because you know them. This technique is for other locations on the web of which you may not be aware.

Real-Life Example

In our original story above, the email that was compromised was actually info at sharedmomentum.com<mailto:info at sharedmomentum.com>. We found that it was published on several pages which we had created… and other directory listings that had picked it up.

With these quick results we could go to each page or website and update the contact information to be current.

Communications: Talking / Writing
Ask for "one"

Have you ever asked someone to tell you how they felt about a project or a suggestion ... and they couldn't think of anything to say? Asking this kind of open-ended question can be overwhelming to some.

Or, perhaps you're asking the team to come up with ideas and you're faced with silence.

There's a trick for getting them started. Ask for one.

When you ask for just "one" idea you prime the pump. Everyone can come up with one.
· "What is one idea you have?"
· "What is one of the things that is wrong with this project?"
· "What is one thing you are feeling right now?"

Yes, you may want more than one ... and you may very well get more ... but the question phrased as asking for one is the magic for releasing the ideas. Everyone can come up with a single item.

And very often, the one thing they tell you will be the most important.
