Library Services and Technology Act Advisory Council Meeting May 9-10

Oregon's Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Advisory Council will meet at the State Library in Salem on Wednesday and Thursday, May 9 & 10, 2018. Mari Cheney will chair the meeting, which will begin at 1:00 p.m. on May 9 and resume at 9:00 a.m. on May 10.
The Council will review the FY2018 LSTA competitive grant applications and make recommendations to the State Library Board concerning elements of the state's LSTA program. The Council will hear recommendations from the Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee (SDLAC), and will hear updates from the Answerland Advisory Committee and Library Support and Development Services staff. An open forum will be held on Wednesday, May 9 at 2:45 p.m. Any member of the public may address the council on any topic during the open forum.

New Exhibit at State Library on Timberline Lodge

A new exhibit, "'Built with Pride and Purpose': Oregon's Majestic Timberline Lodge" is now on display on the second floor of the State Library of Oregon building. It tells the story of recreation on Mount Hood and the planning and building of Timberline, using historic books, magazines, pamphlets and maps from the library's Special and regular collections. The centerpiece of the exhibit is The Crafts of Timberline, a presentation album of photographs and plans of furniture and textiles hand crafted for the Lodge. A copy of the album was presented to Eleanor Roosevelt. Only 3 or 4 of these albums were made.
Timberline Lodge is the crown jewel of Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects in Oregon. When WPA funds were made available for the project in December 1935, Gilbert Stanley Underwood was selected as principal architect and Margery Hoffman Smith was selected the interior designer. Workers on the project came primarily from the WPA, but some jobs were performed by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Lodge was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 28, 1937, was officially turned over to the Forest Service in January 1938, and opened to the public in February of that year.
The exhibit is open to the public during normal business hours, 8-5, Monday-Friday.
