Located in Portland, Oregon, one of the nation's most livable cities,

Position Summary

The Education and Science Librarian consults and collaborates with
scholars; participates in a dynamic instructional program, including face
to face and online instruction; provides reference and information services
for the University’s students and faculty as well as members of the
community; and selects information resources to support the instructional
and research needs of a diverse institution. This position will serve as a
liaison to the academic units and programs in the Graduate School of
Education as well as departments such as psychology and biology depending
on the needs of the Library. The Education and Science Librarian develops
relationships and liaises  with campus units engaged in STEM education
efforts and initiatives. Some evening and weekend reference duty and/or
instruction is required. Portland State University faculty members
contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the
University, engage in community and professional service, and pursue an
active scholarly agenda including publication, research, and seeking grants
as appropriate. This full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position
reports to the Research and Instruction Services Manager.



   Support the instructional and research needs of assigned units.
   Collaborate with these units in assessing information needs; cultivate
   bridges for service and teaching; work with teaching faculty to develop
   discipline-appropriate instruction; provide research consultations for
   faculty and students; and select books, journals, databases, and other
   information resources. Includes teaching or holding consultations during
   some evening and weekend hours.

   Participate in the Library's information literacy and general
   instruction program, face-to-face and online.

   Provide reference and information services for the University’s students
   and faculty as well as members of the community at the reference desk and
   through various information and communications technologies.

   Develop physical and online learning objects and research guides.

   Participate in continual library planning and assessment activities,
   including the collection of relevant data on inputs, outputs, and outcomes.

   Maintain awareness of scholarly communication and copyright issues in
   general and within assigned disciplines and contribute to advocacy efforts.
   Keep colleagues informed of current issues and developments in liaison

   Occasionally direct the work of part-time student employees or interns.

   Engage with relevant student groups and communities.


   Pursue an active publication and research agenda.

   Meet expectations for faculty scholarship in accordance with the
   Library’s and University’s promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review


   Support the mission, goals, and objectives of the Library and the

   Establish short and long-range goals, objectives, and priorities;
   aligned with those of the Library and the University.

   Contribute to the work of relevant Library and University committees and
   work groups.

   Support Library and University development efforts.


   Contribute to the work of professional associations: local, regional,
   national, or international.

   Maintain current professional expertise through participation in
   workshops, classes, professional associations and networks, and through
   continued awareness of the scholarly literature.


   Engage in community endeavors that may benefit from one’s professional
   expertise, and be a good ambassador for the University.

   Contribute to a positive and collaborative environment based on mutual
   respect, service, open communication, and cooperation.

   Maintain effective and productive communications with colleagues,
   administrators, and community users and organizations.

   Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications


   ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent

   Two years working in an academic or research library

   Experience in areas such as: serving academic departments, teaching or
   training, and collection development

   Experience with information literacy concepts

   Ability to successfully complete a background check and provide

Preferred Qualifications


   Degree in education, psychology, or biology OR prior experience as a
   liaison working with education or science departments

   Evidence of professional service and scholarship

   Demonstrated commitment to practices facilitating diversity and inclusion

   Effective communication and collaboration skills

   Flexibility and the ability to work positively in a fast-paced, changing
   environment while collaborating with diverse colleagues, faculty, students,
   and the community

   Experience developing online learning objects (such as tutorials,
   instructional videos, etc.) using multimedia software and platforms


The annual salary rate for this position starts at $73,944 with an
excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a
generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for
employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
