You're invited to OLA/OASL's Legislative Day!

Who: Oregon's Library Community
What: Tell your state legislators what is important to you about libraries.

Particular issues are:

  * New Funding for School Libraries
  * Protecting Our County Law Libraries
  * Supporting Funding for Ready to Read Grants
  * Updating the Definition for Public Library
Issue briefs for all the issues will be available on the OLA Library Development and Legislative Committee website<https://www.olaweb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=199> no later than January 30.

When: Tuesday, February 12th, 2019
Where: State Capitol, Salem, Oregon and all over the state
Why: Because libraries matter!
How: You can participate in person, virtually, or mail a letter.

In person: Check the OLA/OASL Legislative Day section on the Legislative Committee's webpage and select "Make an appointment to see your legislator!" to see if anyone has signed up with your representatives: https://bit.ly/2W17C7w

For a direct link to the spreadsheet, click here: https://goo.gl/Nb2fj4.

If an appointment has already been set, see if you can join the meeting. If not, make your own appointment! Don't know your legislators? Finding out is easy using the Legislator Lookup tool: https://bit.ly/1zqJ5pm

Virtually: Call or email your representative on Tuesday, February 12th to tell them what is important for libraries in your community.

Letter: OLA Library Development and Legislative Committee has a letter template for you to personalize, sign, and mail to your legislator. Email Kate Lasky at klasky at josephinelibrary.org<mailto:klasky at josephinelibrary.org> for more information.

But I don't know how to do all this.
Don't worry, read the following articles for some tips and remember your legislators love to hear from you!

  * "Political Action" issue of OLA Quarterly edited by Janet Webster http://commons.pacificu.edu/olaq/vol2/iss4/
  * "TAKE ACTION NOW! Becoming a Legislative Advocate for Libraries" by Emily Ford http://www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org/2011/take-action-now/
