WEB TOOL - Teaching Tool Kits for Yourself and Students
Intermediate

It all started when one of our New York subscribers answered our question, "What else can we do to help people discover new ways to use the Tech-Talk Database?"

She said, "How about creating Business Tool Kits?"

Sounded great.

But since we didn't really know what one was, we had to figure it out. In the process, not only did we create Tool Kits in Tech-Talk<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_JXNg_GkA4jK6XH869mV56o8JIdpTNA5IxgKXgVm-DgvFW_2sO6GFKV0nlEf0n4pnM7SkmeJ11nK3zp6xqcYag8bOYUg2h6hKISqXeaIGs4FORE0dJ4jNW-6qPL7jy0akohRwyVPn_ey5E3Gvc1OAEW7PeWwPEOr&c=qybsW5Hm3a2ky1jmHq8WeI7piwQiy1vZCRvpZ7_6wyl0B1Ysl4Szmg==&ch=eCzDJ3kBIqQhOaCaIKEXlBv3oRCCH0g2_GpwFZIxM54Rs-5qjbiT_w==> for Business, Education and Communication ... we discovered a couple of sites online that will be helpful for educators of all ages (Elementary, Secondary and Collegiate).

What Are Teaching Tool Kits?

Teaching tool kits vary in style, though each is designed to make it easier to learn. They could be around a topic such as How to Use Forms to Gather Data<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_JXNg_GkA4jK6XH869mV56o8JIdpTNA5IxgKXgVm-DgvFW_2sO6GFKV0nlEf0n4pKr3HF3GrljhGJGHUqjXPbHKLrvh8kO_lA4Fj5Lck7zYQuUTZGDUkavQgNQx4DW6X-S3DhzqNLFs3mLqoagr8A-CTW7x76CcjgwLF3IQy1o8=&c=qybsW5Hm3a2ky1jmHq8WeI7piwQiy1vZCRvpZ7_6wyl0B1Ysl4Szmg==&ch=eCzDJ3kBIqQhOaCaIKEXlBv3oRCCH0g2_GpwFZIxM54Rs-5qjbiT_w==> or How to Lead a Team Project<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_JXNg_GkA4jK6XH869mV56o8JIdpTNA5IxgKXgVm-DgvFW_2sO6GFKV0nlEf0n4pRuAWv2GrveXKVaimeHJ1m4EW_OHjquLIF1dRuZhlMoleTrfaz1OpWBuDitPnEwTYPJu_mGt35JGM0LXIApS53v2zMIDuZAlE6NLyhtTU3bgUuzukwgaF4A==&c=qybsW5Hm3a2ky1jmHq8WeI7piwQiy1vZCRvpZ7_6wyl0B1Ysl4Szmg==&ch=eCzDJ3kBIqQhOaCaIKEXlBv3oRCCH0g2_GpwFZIxM54Rs-5qjbiT_w==>. Or they could be an activity, a technique, or a template that you can use with all sorts of your own subjects.

You can think of a Tool Kit as a mini-course, a micro workshop or a resource for innovative ideas and pre-made activities. Tool Kits are as diverse as your imagination.

Let's take a look at what we have in Tech-Talk and what we've found online.

Tech-Talk Tool Kits

How did we come up with Tool Kits in Tech-Talk? First, we started with the two specific business topics that were suggested: "Developing a Social Media Strategy<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_JXNg_GkA4jK6XH869mV56o8JIdpTNA5IxgKXgVm-DgvFW_2sO6GFKV0nlEf0n4pufMw32LGqm_XbOY0c514R812D6BPmcgs-oIuc6F4QzI4MmZqlAGbfj2ZXJMkIhwmOoWqwBc39hQiiIiuFEUZ8T_quF5XoiyAf1IqmqpI7TffkcGnSixbpe5JdLMaxneP&c=qybsW5Hm3a2ky1jmHq8WeI7piwQiy1vZCRvpZ7_6wyl0B1Ysl4Szmg==&ch=eCzDJ3kBIqQhOaCaIKEXlBv3oRCCH0g2_GpwFZIxM54Rs-5qjbiT_w==>" and "Creating a Communications Plan<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_JXNg_GkA4jK6XH869mV56o8JIdpTNA5IxgKXgVm-DgvFW_2sO6GFKV0nlEf0n4p81t2U8qVI-J6euvIRzWoQIoVZCYuLfAZgRG9JLM5LyAFgd3eTrszTcqXX65-t1HRA1HPZBcOEO1BW6AInx0ZoGxeInOHgn6h9aknBrF04LpauBDBIQ5y29wglRTnlXxT&c=qybsW5Hm3a2ky1jmHq8WeI7piwQiy1vZCRvpZ7_6wyl0B1Ysl4Szmg==&ch=eCzDJ3kBIqQhOaCaIKEXlBv3oRCCH0g2_GpwFZIxM54Rs-5qjbiT_w==>." We combined our corporate and teaching experience, some online resources we found, and, of course, the relevant articles within the Tech-Talk Database!

The goal for each tool kit is to apply what you learn about technology and communications in a practical way. Each learning module follows a format:

1. Completion Time
2. Learning Outcomes
3. Directions
4. Using What You Learned
5. Learning Credits

Yes, that's right, once you complete a Tech-Talk Tool Kit<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_JXNg_GkA4jK6XH869mV56o8JIdpTNA5IxgKXgVm-DgvFW_2sO6GFKV0nlEf0n4pnM7SkmeJ11nK3zp6xqcYag8bOYUg2h6hKISqXeaIGs4FORE0dJ4jNW-6qPL7jy0akohRwyVPn_ey5E3Gvc1OAEW7PeWwPEOr&c=qybsW5Hm3a2ky1jmHq8WeI7piwQiy1vZCRvpZ7_6wyl0B1Ysl4Szmg==&ch=eCzDJ3kBIqQhOaCaIKEXlBv3oRCCH0g2_GpwFZIxM54Rs-5qjbiT_w==>, you can fill out a Learning Credit<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_JXNg_GkA4jK6XH869mV56o8JIdpTNA5IxgKXgVm-DgvFW_2sO6GFKV0nlEf0n4p7JzOm-DNJRh9F8cUkVvAON2nPoV585UNVhPRx3XIKw6BEI_WRD8Qe41z_kkLxBsDHMb4bg0X8OzkHzBYe1veQUkZeJ3hV79E3DhjYQQo-Ng=&c=qybsW5Hm3a2ky1jmHq8WeI7piwQiy1vZCRvpZ7_6wyl0B1Ysl4Szmg==&ch=eCzDJ3kBIqQhOaCaIKEXlBv3oRCCH0g2_GpwFZIxM54Rs-5qjbiT_w==> form and submit it for continuous education credits if your organization supports that type of submission.

Top Hat Teaching Tools

Here's one site we found specifically for faculty in a college environment. It's called Top Hat. There is a page where you can download a series of tool kits which you might find useful ... or which will give you ideas for creating your own.

Communication: Presenting & Writing
Story-telling in the first person and present tense.

I remember hearing this "cookie story" from a well-known professional speaker. He told it in the first person ... as if it were happening right there in the moment.

His method was quite engaging. We were rapt to hear what happened and the twist that he weaved into the story.

Why were we so attentive? Because he was using the technique of telling the tale in first person and present tense ... even though, obviously, the event happened in the past.

So when you're writing or telling a story, let yourself relate it as if it were happening right this minute. (You may observe that we often start Tech-Talk articles with a little story ... many of which are in the first person and present tense.)

TIP: After you write your story, go back and switch all the past tense verbs into the present ... and the pronouns to first person (I or we). Feel how different, how energized the writing now sounds? People won't tune out or gloss over your message now, they'll be interested and attentive.

By the way, next week you'll get the "cookie story" because it has a great lesson and is told by many.
