Oy, I must need dinner.

Left off:

Misinformation, Fake News and Political Propaganda

We are overwhelmed with information. Learn to distinguish truth from fiction
using critical thinking strategies with political ads, news headlines,
graphs / charts, language choice in messaging, statistical data and other
types of information. Become your own "factchecker"!

 "Loved it."

"Would be nice if it was a series over a few nights"

"...well-rounded, wide array of examples. Thank you so much! This was fun
and informative!"

Engagement Award (Apps due 5/31)

To clarify, although I am looking forward to, in general, creating online
workshops should this situation continue [which I think it will], I
specifically saw the OCLC grant as an opportunity for libraries to partner
with me to create something new, something that would truly be a positive,
civic-minded, timely endeavor. My workshops cover key topics that are
important in today's world. They are non-partisan.

I am open to some experimentation with time and format to suit the needs of
these challenging times.

Elections and Campaign Finance

This is a unique workshop covering numerous topics related to our electoral
systems and presenting specific ideas for bi-partisan civic/political
engagement, some active right now! Topics: Voting as Constitutional
right(?), Voter Rights, Voter Fraud, Voter Registration, Voter Turnout,
Alternative Methods of Determining Winners, Redistricting, Electoral
College, Campaign Financing, SuperPACS and 501(c)4s, Contribution Limits,
Dark Money, Campaign Finance Databases, Public Financing of Elections

". this was an excellent presentation."

"I consider myself a well-informed citizen but I learned a great deal of new
information."

"You are a great teacher, Donna."

"Very good, solid information - This is what all Americans need to know."

"Thanks for another informative workshop."

The Constitution - Fulfilling Democracy's Promise?

By looking back at the creation of the Constitution and tracing major
changes to its interpretation we puncture some myths and develop a broader
perspective that helps us evaluate current politics more thoughtfully.

"Amazing what was done [the creation of the Constitution] and what issues
still remain."

"Every citizen should take this serious look at our Constitution."

"Good level of history and contemporary political ideas, their evolution and
relevance to today."

Citizen Activism 101 - Making Change Happen

Improve life for yourself and your neighbors. Learn about types of advocacy
and strategies for change. Brief historical perspective; Examples of
successful advocacy-local-national; Choosing your battles; Who makes the
rules?; Getting heard; tools for change; "Tracking" state and federal
legislation.

"Excellent. Thanks!"

"I loved that you customized your presentation to our area".

"Really liked your explanation of state government, especially the example
of an individual's testimony.removed the anxiety of presenting testimony
that most of us feel so intimidated [by]"

Hi Oregon library community,

Hope you are staying safe and healthy. I've been soaking in information on
elections, the Constitution, misinformation, in prep for continuing my
workshops. But, it looks like in-person workshops will have to wait for
awhile so I'm contemplating online versions.

This might be a great way to "extend your outreach" about topics which are
very timely.

If you would like to chat about the possibility of offering a set of online
Civics workshops, please contact me. We can look at various options.

Take care!

Donna

Subject: [Libs-Or] PL Grant: OCLC Community Engagement Award (Apps due 5/31)

Hi,

Here's a grant opportunity for public libraries - the
<https://www.oclc.org/en/about/awards/community-engagement-award.html> OCLC
Community Engagement Award:

How have you created impact and extended your reach? Public libraries
continuously transform to better support local communities. We are excited
to recognize and celebrate their significant community engagement work with
three $5,000 awards.

Between now and May 31, 2020, tell us about a current project, or one
completed within the past year, that impacts and extends your public
library's reach by engaging with your community. How do you build stronger
relationships? How do you partner to meet local needs? How do you encourage
better conversations? How do you create programming that positively impacts
your community?

Three $5,000 winning library programs will be chosen by a panel of OCLC
member library leaders. We'll contact each winner prior to a public
announcement in July 2020.

Apps are due May 31st, and OCLC membership is not required.

I learned about the grant from the <http://librarygrants.blogspot.com/>
Library Grants blog.

Thanks,

Jen
