The Google Effect: How Search Engines, YouTube, and Other Sites Promote Misinformation, presented by Allie Stevens, Shawna Thorup, and Janice Weddle
This webinar will introduce recent scholarship that explores how search engines' and social media's algorithms can lead to very different search results for different people and how this impacts both individuals and society. We will discuss ways librarians in every setting can teach our communities about these differences to increase awareness.

Allie Stevens is the director of Calhoun County Library in Hampton, AR. She received her MLIS from Louisiana State University in 2015, and was a 2018 ALA Emerging Leader. Shawna Thorup is Head of Reference and Instruction at Northwest Arkansas Community College, which is located about three miles from the Walmart Home Office in Bentonville. Shawna earned her MLS from UCLA and has more than 20 years of library experience. Janice Weddle has worked at Hendrix College's Olin C. Bailey Library since 2017, where she oversees the library's public services as the Assistant Librarian for Instruction and Outreach. Janice earned her MA in Library Science from the University of Missouri.

Fast-tracking Your Professional Reputation: Publishing Books and Getting Involved in ALA, presented by Megan Hodge
How can you get published if you haven't yet done empirical research? How do you get your name on the cover as editor of a professional book? How does joining library associations-whether at the state or national level-benefit you? In this presentation, learn about the book proposal process, how to contribute chapters to edited books, and how getting involved in library associations (particularly ALA) can lead to leadership opportunities and job offers.

Megan Hodge is Head, Teaching & Learning at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. She graduated with her MSLS from the University of North Texas in 2010 and has dedicated much of her professional service and scholarship to the professional development of new librarians. She has been elected to several leadership positions in the American Library Association's New Members Round Table, including serving as president in 2014-2015. In 2012, Megan co-founded the New Members Round Table Forum for the Virginia Library Association with Future Academic Librarian's Toolkit contributor Rebecca Miller Waltz, for which she was awarded the Virginia Library Association's Presidential Citation, and served as the forum's first chair. Megan is also a Councilor-at-Large for the American Library Association (ALA); a doctoral student in educational research, assessment, and evaluation; and a 2011 alumna of the ALA Emerging Leaders program.
