PPT / G-Slides – Give Your Presentation Movement with a Video Background
Intermediate

[PPT background]

I was watching a presentation in a Zoom meeting the other day and the speaker used a video (movement) – right in a PowerPoint slide to emphasize a point. It was in the background… much like you'd use an image.

This subtle technique can really surprise your audience and make your presentations more memorable.

Watch this tip's video<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0010VKBby4nJVDcuvYflUW9UfFIPYDFlWE4E59iyrJY2trp_0yj7SXOeeWdTmhpfAIu4DqUqno_jDt_tGMo_WHbPyKcMZ-jK1NMwbgRrtDA2Rs4IrREJUC-vlirMqHcQpotPU8C1mbCY-lXc5dtUXh5mEqWkO6KqANjNqqwOUIAPeiyAua86ZtD9V9PbSQgyjFX5Lcta_UxzUnWihEs94oBCuuKhGR5L9s7jgcqDRlNWSE=&c=_dI65lIBv880jxbT9WcUcykiP0j7FdNY3gJpRZQ3aNANICqnUmFT2g==&ch=FL0dv_fDZ8goobjb8cRPYuSqroASKy25vZVyihg18pw8NXlwGjyGDg==> to see this technique in action!

Let's jump in and see how easy it is to add a video to your PowerPoint or Google Slides … and two things you need to do to make it display properly in your slideshow.

PowerPoint: Add a Video Background to a Slide

First, add a new slide to your presentation. You may want a blank one, or one with a text box if you are going to include content that will display on top of the video.

· In the toolbar go to Insert and then Video. You'll have the choice to upload a video from your computer or insert a URL from a video online.

[insert video]

· Once your video is added, drag the corner to resize it to fit your slide.

· Then double-click on the video to engage the Video Format options in the ribbon. There are many settings changes you can make, but first we'll look at playback options – how your video will start in your slideshow.

That's simple, right?

Playback Options

[playback]

If you just add a video to your slide without any modifications, in Presentation mode a control bar will display at the bottom of the slide and you'll need to click on it to start the video.

If you want the video to begin playing automatically when that slide appears, you'll need to make a setting change.

Click on the video to engage Video Format in the toolbar and then select Playback in the ribbon. In the Video Options section, use the drop-down window under "Start" to select one of these choices:

· Automatically – The video will start when the slide appears.
· On Click or When Clicked On – The video plays when you click in the video frame during your presentation.
· In Click Sequence – The video will play in the sequence of actions that you have set up in Animations. You can set the video to play with a trigger. For example, you may want text to appear on your slide first, and then with an animation set up, your video will start. NOTE: This option is available in Office 365, PowerPoint 2019, and 2016 (version 1709 or later).

Loop Your Video

You may have a video that is used just for visual interest that is short (for example, 10-20 seconds long). In this case, you will want to set it to Loop so that it gives the appearance of continuous movement as you speak.

· Click your video to engage the Video Format options and click on the Playback link.
· In the ribbon, check the box for Loop until Stopped.
· Your video will now seamlessly loop until you advance to the next slide.

[loop until stopped]

Other Video Formatting Options

In the Playback section of the screen you have other options:

· Use the Play button on the far left to see how the video will look.
· Trim the video to shorten it if needed.
· Use a Fade In or Fade Out feature.
· If the video has sound, you can adjust the Volume or mute it.

[other options]

Add Other Elements to Your Video Slide

Now that you have your video in place, you may want to add some text or other objects on top of it to enhance your message.

· Click the video to engage it.
· On the Video Format Tab, click the Send Backward button. If you have a text box already on the slide it will appear. Type and format your message.
· Or, click the Insert button and choose Text Box to add an empty canvas.
· You can also add shapes, images, logos, etc… on top of your video.

Add Video to Master Slide

In this tip we've talked about adding a video as a background to one slide at a time. However, if you have a short presentation, you can add the video element to your whole presentation ... by creating using the Master slide function.

To add a video as a template background, it would be part of the Master Slide. See how to edit the master slide in this Tech-Talk tip<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0010VKBby4nJVDcuvYflUW9UfFIPYDFlWE4E59iyrJY2trp_0yj7SXOeeWdTmhpfAIuUBTrGfo6gMoNI4P7EknB9YXaB2WQKxatnYG0MAudNye2Xs05hsIyxrpUb4oR4kn-_2p9sq1dtI5jYxcB-ToVL6Wujkzws1aWNtvLlHjI1n7XVgB2l51ExiVXw0NarOO9Lu11enrI_SXzFDc0iPmZ6Q==&c=_dI65lIBv880jxbT9WcUcykiP0j7FdNY3gJpRZQ3aNANICqnUmFT2g==&ch=FL0dv_fDZ8goobjb8cRPYuSqroASKy25vZVyihg18pw8NXlwGjyGDg==>.

There are many stock photo/video sites available where you can download video files to your computer to use in a slide.

Here are a few no-cost options:

Google Slides - Add a Video Background

CAUTION: Although you can add a video to a G-Slide with a text box overlay, in this Google app, when the video starts playing the text box disappears.

· Open a Google Slides presentation and select the slide in which you want to add a video.
· From the menu go to Insert, and select Video.
· In the window, you'll have the options to Search, Enter a URL or select one from your Google Drive. TIP: If you have a video saved on your computer, you must upload it to Drive to select it.
· Once you have made a choice, click the Select button.
· Then click on the lower corner to resize the video on your slide.
· The Format options window will open on the right so that you can make adjustments such as Start/End time, Autoplay, Mute, etc...

Communications: Positive
The nonverbal twist of your lips (up) will do it

I was emailing back and forth with one of our subscribers (the DCMO School Library System) when I noticed a stunning quote in Rachel's email signature block.

Yes, she used that area for branding their organization and telling how to reach her ... and she also added a postscript to communicate a message.

Here it is:

Don't let the world change your smile.
Let your smile change the world.

How cool is that? It's so profound. You can think about it from the first part: don't let the world get you down. And you can realize the impact you can make in the second part by being positive and showing a friendly face.

You communicate more with a smile than a hundred or even a thousand words.

Leadership
Managers in Benevolent Mode

“We know what is good for our employees. We have their best interests at heart.”

While this may sound great, the attitude of a benevolent manager is not one of inclusion, nor is it particularly respectful.

Rather than ask the employee to weigh-in on decisions that affect him or her, the people are moved around and "done for" instead of being "worked with."

Certainly, there are times when management knows best because of greater insight and perspective ... and needs to make a benevolent decision. Just as a parent, some actions need to be done for, not with, an employee. Used as the exception, not the rule, this approach has value.

Gary worked for a Fortune 50 corporation in the internal audit and operational analysis department. Teams were sent across the nation, with only 24 hours notice.
Individuals were pulled from one project and put on another without being consulted.

Yes, the executive view of what needed to be done was vital. But Gary felt like a pawn instead of a valued employee. His voice was never heard. He was just told, "We know what is best for you. We have your career in mind as we schedule projects." He was expected to do what he was directed, trusting in their benevolence.

After Note: So far we have described three of the four types of modes a manager (or supervisor) can be in: autocratic, democratic, and now benevolent. Next week we'll talk about the fourth and which one should predominate for greater success.
